Is the end result more impressive? No. A "nice" city is a "nice" city.
Is a build more or less impressive if you knew the effort involved? Absolutely. And I think that's what the OP was saying: based on effort (and time), creative builds are "easier" than survival ones to do. We all know that(!) so I don't get why this has gone on for 7 pages.

OMG - Did you eschew the available technology and paint the first smiley by hand? That took soooo much more effort and more time than the second one.... Therefore, I should be sooo much more impressed by that one than the second one! Not.
That's like saying "I'm more impressed by a bookshelf build by pushing the nails in by hand rather than with a hammer." Sure, that's quite a feat, and impressive. But why quibble when the bookshelf built with all the right tools looks good and is fully functional?
I built structures in two worlds with Survival before I discovered a co-op server. Now I'm a moderator, and we build city walls in creative, then switch over to survival for the players to enjoy and fill the cities with their creations. I'm the guy in charge of building dungeons for the players to explore, filled with traps, hazards, and decoration, and if I had to do that in survival, I'd probably still be on the first one. Thanks to creative, we have over twenty dungeons, with more on the way.
People who say they hate creative are, in my opinion, not enjoying the game to its maximum potential. It's like watching a blockbuster summer movie without the special effects.
I find all the analogies hilarious. Everyone keeps saying, "It's like [doing this]", only it isn't, folks. It's not LIKE anything, it is what it is. We aren't talking about ALL those other things, we are talking about Minecraft. We are talking about a video game. From my observations (although this certainly doesn't make it fact), most folks I've spoke to tend to appreciate builds done in survival more.
Also remember, survival lends itself to building in a different fashion, as there are many more things to consider and that need to be handled. Builds will take into consideration defense, durability, storage and life support.
As an artist, I totally get things being subjective, but I also know people can be very interested in what goes into the process.
I couldn't agree more. I rarely build anything in creative mode as it takes barely any time or thought. But when building in survival mode, resources need to be gathered and there needs to be some thought or planning prior to the build to make it aesthetically pleasing.
.... What are you even talking about? So, you're saying that the redstone CPU I'm building takes minimal thought and planning? I threw a bunch of random parts together, and I just happen to be lucky enough for it to turn into a functional computing machine? *facepalm* If I was to be working on my current project in survival, (which would be the most ignorant decision ever) that would only add two items to my to-do list: 1 - Mine redstone. 2 - Collect blocks. Woo! Boy, that took a lot of thought and effort! I'm glad the hard part is over and I can now focus on the simple part; building a perfectly synchronous data processing monster that can manipulate information through any logical or arithmetic functions perceivable by mankind.
See, this is what really irritates me. I have no problem with survivalist builders. They should just go work on their own little projects like the rest of us do. Don't try to glorify your build and pretend that it's so much more meaningful and difficult than a creative build. And for the love of god, don't be so moronic as to suggest it requires more intelligence. That comment up there should be nominated for a "Stupidest Post of the Year" award. A survival build takes more time... that's it, that's literally all there is to it. I know that not all survivalists are like this, but to the stuck up snobby elitists that are, please come down from your imaginary pedestal and stop pretending that you're part of some kind of superior Minecraftian race. That is all.

I believe what they are appreciating more, then, is the gameplay skill... not the impressiveness of the build itself. As Geneo pointed out... that's a different thing entirely. When a person builds a huge structure in Hard Survival mode entirely, I AM impressed with their gameplay skill. It no longer really matters that that the build itself is perfectly balanced, structurally possible, to scale, or aestethically pleasing. What's impressive is that the builder probably fought off a zillion different mobs to get it erected.
However, what tends to go on here is an "ego contest" (can't say the word I really want to put in) with survivalist builders not being satisfied with people being impressed by their gameplay. Nooo, they have to try to take away whats really impressive about creative builds and demean them as "cheaters." Creative builds do take a lot of planning and a lot of skill and a LOT of creativity to think about them. If two builds are equal in those aspects then I feel I should be EQUALLY impressed with those creative skills sets regardless of whether or not the person opted to save some time and build their creation in creative mode. As I said before, in the real world, my boss would be less impressed by my eschewing available technology to produce my work in a longer period of time the "hard" way.
However, I don't see how the mere act of removing colored blocks makes the time spent any more justifiable? Time spent placing blocks is still leisure time spent in whatever way makes a person feel happy and at rest. Should I be more impressed with time spent pressing the left trigger or the right?
I am not in any way saying that people are misusing their time. For me personally, I feel a little empty- regardless of how elaborate or impressive a project is, if I am not gathering materials or doing other work to accomplish my goals. But, that is not the same as saying that other people shouldn't or even that I may not change my mind about the whole thing...many of the ideas I have are going to HAVE to be done in creative. At present though, I feel bored after a few minutes alone in a flatland with my blocks...

I agree - in survival mode there is a "connectiveness" that occurs when mining blocks that is oddly satisfying and relaxing. I do spend a lot of time in "zenning out" mining in peaceful survival mode... and I enjoy it. I also enjoy building more elaborate things in creative mode... and then sometimes playing those worlds again in survival mode with friends. I don't find that boring either. If I'm out to compete with other players in my world, then the mobs get turned on (various levels) and away we go... and I enjoy that too. Rather than "cheating," I look at it as getting maximum enjoyment out of my $20 spent on the game.
Is the end result more impressive? No. A "nice" city is a "nice" city.

Word!
p.s For the record.. I'm not talking about Redstone Creations... I myself do all my Redstone experiments in Creative.

I built a full dungeon of 10 levels with a puzzle in each room along with secret items, actual exploration, and one huge Redstone-door maze all in survival.
It was a lot of work and took a really long time.
Then survival came out and I built a much smaller but much more impressive and functional dungeon in 3 days rather than a few months. I'm much more happy with my creative build because others can also appreciate it more, unlike my very limited and flawed previous design.
My conundrum: I built half the the No Mercy map of Left 4 Dead all in survival. Creative mode came out and now I have the ability to finish the rest much quicker. But should I go back and re-do all the buildings to make everything look nicer?? Or should I keep that section how it is to retain its former survival mode glory, yet make it look like junk compared to the rest?

I haven't touched it since creative mode came out
