I find the poll confusing - "All of the above" has nothing above it, so did I actually vote that I use all of them or none of them?
For me, it depends what world I'm in. To do my one-chest challenge, I definitely intend to use these materials for building in order to avoid having too much of them accumulate in the chest (which hasn't happened yet since the mere act of converting iron to iron blocks, etc. reduces 7 stacks into 1 slot in the chest. When I do go over the 1 slot, I will build with them, probably locating them in spots where I could easily scavenge them if I ever need to get the ingots or diamonds back for tools and/or armor. In my other worlds, where I allow my storage to exceed one chest, I don't tend to build with these materials much. I really hate the looks of both the gold and diamond blocks. I do like the look of the iron block, but tend to use up much of my iron for rails instead... and one reason why I developed the one-chest challenge for myself was to get away from the habit of just continually collecting supplies and never using them for much of anything.
I'd build with gold if I found enough of it, because it's basically useless for anything other than powered rails, but diamond & iron are strictly for tools and armor.
