Do you use the minecart with chest or furnace? If so what for? It seems that for mining by the time i lay rail down etc. it is quicker to place a furnace or carry stuff back. I do run rail lines between villages or houses in different biomes but have not found a good use for the 'chest minecart' or the 'furnace minecart'.
Am I missing something here? Does anyone use these on a regular basis?
Yes I do. For example. When I dismantle a Stronghold.. Ill lay rail down then 1furnace cart and 4chestcarts and another furnace cart.
Ill load em up.. then send on on their way back home.. it allows for collection of alot of resources before having to stop due to a full inventory.... I do this with mineshafts as well... I freaking Love em! I can mine for hours.. If need be.

I haven't used a furnace minecart yet, but since finding out recently that they will push other minecarts without the need for power rails, I am definitely planning to use them regularly. What was holding me back from placing more railroads in my worlds was the need for a number of power rails (and a lack of gold on hand in some of my worlds in order to make them). However, I do have plenty of coal in all of my worlds, so stoking furnace minecarts will be no problem. As OverlookDEnt suggests, I envision using them to send minecarts with chests home and thereby extend my times before having to surface to unload my inventory. It will also circumvent the risk of being killed by a creeper or whatever while attempting to carry precious ores (i.e. diamonds) home.

So you can push a chest cart with a fueled mine cart and no powered rails? Can you push a cart you a riding in? What kind of fuel consumption are we looking at?

yes it can push a cart you are riding... although you might need 2 furnace carts for a 45 degree uphill ride. That is the incline that is made in 1 block height all the way up.
That is if they have fixed a few things with the minecarts...
I have always wondered about these types of seteps as well. So the furnace cart just has to have coal in it right? It doesn't actually have to be smelting anything or "in use" in order to move? And how do you tell it which direction to start travelling? Do you just give it a helping hand and give it a push in the direction you want it to go?

The furnace goes in the direction that the coal is put in it from, so if you put the coal in standing behind the minecart w/ furnace, it will travel away from you. I also know they have trouble pushing other items around Hairpin turns. I believe one lump of (char)coal fuels it for a little over 4 min, but i'm not 100% on it.

well a starter block at each end helps give it direction, since it will keep going till it runs out of coal/track or hits a mob or block and goes the other direction... That and what the others have mentioned.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I get more annoyed with animals or mobs blocking my minecarts or end up getting in them. Even tried running fence on both sides to keep them out but they still spawn along the track. Wish mobs wouldn't spawn in fenced in areas. Thought that was the whole purpose of leading them with wheat and seeds. So far the time being I haven't been placing track at all. Also recently created my main base out of obsidian right outside the end portal with a staircase leading up above ground also. Even made an underground wheat farm that gives me about 3 stacks of wheat when harvested in total.

My time on the Xbox was rather limited last night, but I ran a quick test and did manage to get a furnace cart to push a minecart I was riding in by sprinting alongside and hopping into the moving cart after putting the fuel into it. This was on a superflat world, so I don't know yet whether it will push the loaded cart up a hill and how far. Will do more testing with it tonight if I get a chance to play.

In one of my world's I have run a fence right beside the approximately 500 m of track with no free blocks on either side. The track is laid on a cobblestone foundation and the fence has been placed on wooden planks. The world is pretty flat, so track only goes up and down 1 or 2 blocks at a time and I was able to place the powered rails every 25 blocks. The redstone torches are placed underneath the powered tracks, so they are completely out of sight. In areas where the fence must go up or down a block, I've made the fence double high to stop animals and such jumping down onto the track from higher areas. To be able to cross the tracks, I've placed gates at every powered rail. Torches are placed on the fence every 7th block. It works well and I've never had any animals or monsters blocking the tracks so far. The track does have one gradual series of turns in it that it navigates just fine even though the distance between the fences is just one block.
current world im running rails at least 2 blocks above ground level. better view and no spawning issues torches every 6 blocks. torches don't have to be that close.
Only thing to keep in mind is that furnace carts won't push past a "HairPin" turn. Only 1 Cart is needed to push at least what I have 4 chestCarts up 45 degree incline. I think it does upto 5. Make the "drop stations" with half slabs so you can easily power the furnaces from either direction. They make life so much easier. If well lit no hostiles will spawn, place the rails on stone not grass blocks and you will have no issues with Animals spawning on the track.

I was actually reffering to a manned cart... Not sure if that is the same or not...The chests it should be able to with 1. Unless you know... I have only messed with these a little bit to know they work...><

Do you perhaps have a photo of the 1/2 slab "drop station" idea? I'm having a little trouble envisioning it.

I can put one later.. I'm at work at the moment...
__ so like that pretty much, the wood is half slabs. The furnaces are the carts w/furnaces and the chest are chests w/carts.So it comes to a stop and they don't get derailed as the back furnace keeps on pushing.. Same thing would be in the other end/ "dropstation".
I use minecarts for myself and minecarts with a chest when I have too much cobblestone in my inventory. I typically don't incinerate cobble so I just send it back home. Walking back is usually not an option for me because my mines are pretty deep.

might have to revisit that because i typically only use straight up carts for travel.
