I voted number three; however, there is one annoying exception:
*creeper sneaks up from behind*
Player: OH HOT CAKES, I'd better cheat!
*player switches to peaceful mode*
Player: Oh yeah, I killed that creeper legit!
*player switches back to hard mode*
Player: I'm a hardcore hard-mode Minecraft player! Boo ya!
me on a super hostile map ^.^ but other than that i play hard, no glitches..
I personally say to each their own. I play survival/hard and do not dupe. However, I could care less what other people do on their worlds. The leaderboards are only interesting to me so that I can see my own personal stats, not my ranking.
I think the only things I'd truly call "cheating" are taking advantage of glitches and switching back & forth between creative & survival mode to give yourself extra advantages. It's one thing to build a world and then play in it, it's another to say "crap, I need an eye of ender... I'll just spawn a few in creative then go back to my regular game". Beyond that, I'd classify things like xp farms or save/reload for enchanting to be kinda lame... but also sorta justified in a way. I mean, why are enchantments random anyway? Given that we need books to make more powerful enchantments, aren't we essentially reading the magic words to create the enchantment? Even if you don't know what a spell does the first time you try it, you'd know afterwards.

The real issue in this example is not cheating, it's misrepresentation. To switch between the game modes is not arbitrarily cheating since it is something that is really only available in single player or by mutual consensus in a multiplayer world. If the player(s) had, before the world was started, agreed that switching between modes would be allowed if creepers were encountered, then that becomes part of the agreed upon "rules" for playing in that world (no different than "hunger games" rules that are set by the world hosts). Since the developer has not written an official "rulebook" for Minecraft, the rules become whatever the players choose to make them. The issue here is that the example player then allegedly opts to misrepresent what is happening to others... and that's lying, not cheating.
A secondary issue may be that the "rule" was not what the player originally set for themselves at the outset of the world. In other words, the player may have said to himself/herself as he/she created the world: "I'm going to play this world all in hard mode like hardcore." Then, when the creeper appeared, the player changed his/her mind and, hence, the rule he/she made at the outset was thrown out the window. This would then fit a definition of "letting yourself down" or "cheating yourself." As I said earlier, changing rules midstream (even one's you just set for yourself) is, IMO, always cheating.
i use dupes on sand gravel and iron only ,mostly sand though , and low and behold the game has not been ruined at least in my eyes and hey beauty is in the eye of the block holder

You can NOT cheat in minecraft. Minecraft is NOT a competitive game like COD or Halo. As for the dupe glitch unless you are actually modding your controller or xbox itself to do it, its NOT cheating. I just want to make sure that everyone knows that I think its NOT cheating, LOL!!!
I will say seriously though that since it isnt a competitive game you really arent cheating. XBOX to my knowledge gets upset about stuff in games like COD and Halo, because if people are cheating to get kills then the other players are going to get upset since they dont have a chance at winning. Thus they stop playing the game and then XBOX and the company that made the game may start losing money.

I disagree. The existence of the leaderboards (even though they function abysmally) makes some aspects of this game inherently competitive. Duping in a world where the leaderboards and achievements are active arbitrarily affects the standings on the leaderboards and, therefore, constitutes cheating people who have actually mined the blocks out of their rightful position on them. Only IF a person were to intentionally disable the leaderboards for a single-player world (by first entering creative mode and/or using host privileges) could they then claim that what they are doing only affects themselves.
Even the leaderboards are irrelevant. I have had mine reset so many times I have lost count. Also, I dont know a single person that cares about the leaderboards anyway. Its not like its for money or for fame and it really isnt a competition since we arent fighting each other or whatever. I guess somewhere someone might actually put stock into the leaderboards, but I dont anymore. I did care until the 3rd reset then I said who cares. Also, I dont actually use the glitch stuff, but dont see how its cheating or really why anyone cares about it. Also I really dont see why people think using creative mode is cheating. That makes me scratch my head honestly.
Lastly, modding controllers and the xbox itself is cheating. Taking advantage of something thats in the game is not. If 4J wants it out then its their game and they most certainly have the right to take out whatever they want, but if its in the game and everyone has the same opportunity to do it, then its not cheating. Cheating in gaming involves an unfair advantage that only certain people can benefit from. In this case every person on here can dupe if they feel like it. Just saying.

There is another thread running currently where a poster has expressly said that they dupe rather than go into creative mode to avoid having the leaderboards and achievements disabled in their world. That person obviously cares about them, so now you know of at least one. I believe this is duping with an intent of gaining an unfair advantage over other people who actually mine the blocks to gain their position on the leaderboards and the people who actually earn their achievements by individually performing the tasks described. Conversely, switching into creative mode would not be cheating since the "price" of doing so has been set by the developers - i.e. going into creative mode disables the leaderboards and achievements for that world, so any "advantage" over others is prevented. Whether or not everyone can dupe if they want to is irrelevant... Everyone can also cheat if they want to cheat. Duping with an intent of circumventing the developer's penalty of having the leaderboards and achievements disabled IS cheating, IMHO.
Reading this argument, all i keep thinking about is the South park Episode where Cartman acts as a teacher to inner city youths, and teaches them the "value" of cheating...
Well thats nice that someone actually cares about the leaderboards. I personally do not and none of my friends who play do either. Its not like its for money and I personally dont know anyone that plays this game specifically because they want to do well on the leaderboards. Really if its that big of an issue I would say 4J should just get rid of the leaderboards as they really serve no purpose. I still dont believe its cheating though due to the fact that there is no modding of controllers or xboxs and that the game allows you to do it anyway.
Minecraft is a sandbox game; you can't cheat in an unmodded client, even using TMI or an x-ray mod in Hardcore is not cheating, neither is an invincibility mod, although playing with those will make you bored of Minecraft quicker than usual.
Cheating is when you go and use cheat mods on servers with players that do not have it, or voting to obtain 'god weapons', extended abilities and diamonds. Cheating is also using cheat mods on, let's say, Hardcore and then posting your achievements without mentioning the cheat mods/ glitch exploits.
That's like saying that people cheat when they get s skeleton to kill a creeper to get a music disc. It's just taking advantage of resources given and using smarts to be ahead of the game. Survival of the fittest.
Well said.

There are so many topics that turn into arguments about XP farms or mob grinders.

Just my point of view.
