I see the word 'cheating' used a lot in the forums and wonder what people mean. Personally I only play hard survival but voted #3; any intended part of the game is good. I do 'feel' like I cheated if I die a long way from home and just go back to a previous save so I don't lose a bunch of diamond tools but i don't do that anymore; too much unfun guilt. But it's not 'cheating' as i define it.
Cheating is what each individual considers cheating... Cheating considered to one person is not the same exact thing as what another person would consider cheating. Hence the saying that everybody is different.

This should really be everyones answer.
You cannot speak for another person in this situation. I myself find people who enchant something then quit and reload to get a different enchantment less than honest players. That doesn't mean someone else views it as cheating. It just means that if you're playing in my world and want to do it, I'm booting you and you can stay gone.
Unless its a pvp or some other kind of competitive map, the only person you can cheat is yourself. That "line" is going to be drawn differently by everyone. It helps alot that minecraft is not a linear game. It really has no goal, not even killing the ender dragon is really the end.
Duplication glitches. I hate it when people use those, especially on rare items, like diamonds. If you're not going to play fair and get all your resources an honest way while playing with me, you're gone.
Also, I hate it when people use things in ways they weren't meant to be used, such as using the Wither to kill the Ender Dragon (I heard it's possible). To me, that's just bull. If I catch anybody doing it, I'll kill them and take all their gear, then burn it in lava. Then, I'll spend all the experience they dropped on low level enchantments on stone tools, then burn them, too. I'm a hardcore anti-cheater in certain aspects. While other people may think it's a good strategy, I think it's just plain low-life cheating.
It doesn't really matter. If someone wants to ruin their own fun let them. As for if they can play with my I dont mind as long as they dont mess with my stuff

To add onto that, if you're a guest in a game, cheating is whatever the host considers cheating
To me, cheating is exploiting something to your benefit. For example, duplication glitches, generating a world with the same seed in creative to find certain things, xp farms (Yes, I understand that most people would disagree with this, but it's my opinion), and abusing saves when enchanting would all be considered cheating in my book.
Cheating is rather objective since everyone has a slightly different perception of it.

oh yeah almost forgot that part...lol makes perfect sense, as it is to respect the host's wishes or rules they have mentioned, and everything that goes with it.:D
I don't think it's possible to "cheat" at a non-competitive game with no particular goals. There's play styles that I consider weak though.
If I had to say something was cheating, it would be taking saves to a computer and editing the data. Last I checked the top seventh or so "players" on the mining leaderboards had impossible amounts other than hacked saves. There were people with 65,000 clay blocks before clay was even in the game!
I actually do agree with this, as modifying the game by external means, is like using a game shark or game genie...Well the way I see it...lol Can't say I haven't used those, just that I have no interest in them now that my sense of how I play games has developed over the years...:D

mc i do believe is cheatable. the glitches. the saves as mentioned and as with any game. not following rules. of coarse how i see it. not in my servers and dont mess wit my stuff. i dont want it. if i get it i destroy it. and will kick the person. im fine with it as long as im not effected or anyone in my servers are effected. like pvp games. host using host privledges and sides with a team i consider cheating. host shldnt be on a team unless specified before the game begins. not joining a team jus because that team is losing. some hosts jus spawn stuff for a team. some hosts abuse their own rules and privledgeswell this is my view of cheating in mc
outside of outright HACKS, exploiting glitches is cheating in my opinion.
with minecraft, pretty much just duplication glitches...
I've never understood the logic that says using a duplication glitch is cheating but using an X-ray glitch is not. If a person thinks of using one glitch as a cheat because it is a glitch, then I think the only fair line to draw is to think of using any glitch as cheating. In a multiplayer game, I think cheating means whatever the group agrees on. If a group agrees that in a particular world, mining a block is cheating, then it's cheating... even though it is an intended part of Minecraft in most circumstances. If a group decides to make a world a glitchfest, then using a duplication glitch would not be cheating in that world. In a single player game, cheating is whatever the individual sets as cheating. However, the definition of cheating in either case should be set before the world is created and the game is started. Changing the rules midstream is, IMO, always cheating.

That's not necessarily true though. I used the duplication glitch many times after the initial release of MCXBLA, but only to create my own faux creative mode. If someone uses the glitch to rank themselves up on the leaderboards, it is definitely cheating as they are giving themselves an unfair advantage over other players. As for other things, I'm a bit on the fence. For example; some people consider XP grinders or infinite loops on minecart tracks to be cheating. It does give one an advantage over someone who pursues the more traditional style of gameplay, yet all they're doing is taking advantage of intended mechanics of the game. It may seem somewhat shady, but you have to admit it is definitely clever.
Personally, since creative mode came out, I strictly adhere to the basic rules of survival, when playing that game mode. No quitting without saving because I didn't get the enchantment I wanted, or because I fell in lava and lost some diamonds. There are an estimated 10,000 diamond ores in an XBLA-sized world. I will lose interest in the map long before I use up all of the diamonds. I will admit that I don't delete worlds after dying, which is a bit strange since I've always advocated and supported the one-life rule in many roguelike RPGs.
I guess cheating would be over obviously taking advantage of game rules so that it is to your advantage. I only say it this way because earlier today, I was repeatedly exiting without saving so that I could get a Fortune 3 enchantment on my pickaxe and now i feel rather guilty. I guess cheating would be any obvious game change that makes you feel guilty as if you've done wrong.
I voted number three; however, there is one annoying exception:
*creeper sneaks up from behind*
Player: OH HOT CAKES, I'd better cheat!
*player switches to peaceful mode*
Player: Oh yeah, I killed that creeper legit!
*player switches back to hard mode*
Player: I'm a hardcore hard-mode Minecraft player! Boo ya!
As this is in the Xbox section I must ask, do you actually know anyone who takes the time to exit, switch to peaceful, start the game again and then says they are hardcore for doing that?

so duplication glitches were intended?

It's that simple.
Of course, only cheaters condone cheating.
