Well, this is my first topic post and I'm not sure how well this will go but I figured I would give it a try. I am fairly new to the forums and have only played Minecraft on the xbox. I have been trying to put together a plan for a project and thought I would reach out.
So I got some of my wife's family addicted to minecraft and thought it would be fun to have a map that we could all play when we got together as a family or when we were online. I had an idea for a survival game/adventure map. I read the idea somewhere and I really liked it. What I want to do is have a chunk of a map with different landscapes, forest, a village, a ravine, and completely enclose it with a dome or box. I want no sunlight so that it can always be dark and will cause more monster spawns. I then want to make some puzzles or traps to make it less of a mad dash kind of thing. You will have a start point in a supply room and a goal to reach.
My question to anyone who would like to help me out is if you have any suggestions for traps, puzzles, or general gameplay help. I have never built any game maps or anything like it. My creative work has focused on structures and I have been struggling with a decent plan. If anyone could point me in the right direction or offer some help or advice that would be much appreciated.
This site is bursting with original content and loads of great inspiration. You'll most likely find everything you need within this site alone. The map your panning to create sounds a lot like what people around here refer to as "Hunger Games" (you may have seen the movie). Basically there is an area of land that has been closed off with walls, or in your case a dome/box. Within the arena there are various landscapes and sometimes even buildings across the area. Scattered throughout these structures and land masses are bonus chests that contain things that would aid the player in defeating the other team/players. Sometimes there are obstacles to make getting the more useful items more difficult. It's a really fun way to play the game and its also really fun to make your own take on the game play.
Starting a new world you will have a lot of options. Some people prefer, when making these specific game types, to use the "Superflat"' option so they don't have to spend time modifying their randomly generated landscape. Others like the aesthetic value of building around natural looking formations. This is really a personal preference and I would encourage you to explore both options. If you DO choose to use a map with land masses you could check out our MCX360 Seed's section and find a seed that would be perfect for what your trying to build (for hunger games a large flat area, or building over water is a popular choice).
Once you have your world generated, be it superflat or seed, you will then need to begin creating the arena. I noticed you said you had used creative before but were mainly focused on structures. This is perfect for Hunger Games! Since your already familiar with the creative game mode we won't waste anytime on that. You will now have to decide how you want your outer perimeter to be defined. You mentioned a dome or box shape. I will tell you that the box would be much faster to create but the domes always look better in the end. Google is your friend if you decide to go with the dome shape.
When it comes to the inner part of your arena its really up to you. Understanding that on a superflat world that a ravine would be rather boring if you built it at the default ground level (only three blocks above bedrock) is an important note. This is a pretty simple process but do keep in mind where your players will start the game and be sure that all your landscapes allow for fluid movement (unless that is the goal) . The buildings within these maps is usually where all the goodies reside. To make obtaining the objects a challenge people use various 'puzzles' to put distance between the player and the object. Parkor is a heavily used one that is quite effective. The user is presented with gaps between various blocks that the must jump. Some distances warrant the user sprinting as they jump from block to block some do not. Its always a challenge and personally makes me nervous every time haha.
Some final notes for you. To define a spawn area for you players you would simply divide up the teams and have them go to their "supply rooms" as you stated. Supply each player with a bed to sleep in and have them all sleep in a bed (they don't actually have to sleep through the night, laying down in the bed and then getting back out will set their spawn). You may also decide not to let players spawn back withing the arena after they have, if so, remove the beds from the equation. There us also the matter if letting players into the arena and keeping them there. As long as your playing with family (not my family) they should play by the rules. However if you ever plan to play with anyone else they might try to find loop holes in your design. Lining the outside of your arena in a layer of bedrock is a sure fire way to keep them in (this includes what ever layer you decide is the bottom of your arena). Making sure that however you get players is a one way entrance is the second part of this. Having them jump from the top of the arena into a pool of water or closing of the floor once they have been raised into the arena are two ways I have used in the past. At the end of the day there will always be people that just wan't to cheat the system and that is why 4J Studios was blessed us with a "Kick" option from the in game menu.
This is a VERY small amount of information of the art of designing these arena based game types. So for that reason I have provided you with various links around the forums that will aid you in your creation of a custom map of this type.
