Not exactly THE ONE tip to tell someone, but this is still very useful. (especially if you are in a sandy area.)
Use this method to save on shovels!
If you encounter a stack of sand or gravel while digging, dig one block under the first non-sand/gravel block and then place a torch. then break the non-sand/gravel block and then all the sand and gravel that falls will immediately break into harvested pieces and you won't have to dig it out of your way.
Here is a diagram if the explanation is confusing.
Don't be holding a valuable item while facing lava and accidently hit the B button
Ha! I used to do this with my map all the time!... kinda grew out of that.. Every once in a while that might still happen when I get snuck up on by a mob.

HAHA! Yep, my map is the item I accidently throw all the time too. I don't know what it is that makes me want to hit the B button when I am done looking at it.

it feels like the map is a seperate menu cause it's so big i still occasionally throw it. i even started making extra maps so i would always have one if i have a brain fart again.

This was a really sad moment for me, but... I accidentally threw the very first diamond pickaxe I ever made on the very first world I ever started into a lake of lava... I scolded myself for days after that incident... Didn't want to exit without saving, because I would have lost over 4 hours of work on Midgar (my home base).
Crouching or sneaking (pushing in on Left Stick) will help to prevent falling over a ledge. Very useful when working on high, narrow ledges.
Man when I first started playing the game I did not know the sneak thing, and I built a gravity grinder without that knowledge...
You can only imagine how much time it took as I inched my way to place block by block and my "dirt scaffolding" system...
Sigh.. the good old days of Noobness.

I can, because I have done the exact same thing. A kind soul I met on the forums informed me of this useful bit of knowledge when we were setting up the wheat farm. He was explaining that sneaking when walking on farmland would prevent it from being trampled. Oh, there's tip # 2
uh... if you don't mine diamonds without a diamond pick, and you can't make a diamond pick without diamonds... Anyways, my advice would be a simple one. Be Prepared.
uh yeah no ish sherlock........ First thing I do is find 5 diamond 3 for a pick 2 for an enchant table then I make a nether portal usualy takes me 30 mins
