not only can it help you if you fall in lava, but can wash creepers and other mobs away, and that long drop into the ravine, can help with that too, the lava to hot to cross, pour water on it then retrieve it
A bucket of lava works too. But I guess you would lose the items they drop.
For me I guess I would have to say. Survive.
very helpful tip to do what you can to do exactly what the tip says to do. Just. Survive.
You can do a "block jump" by looking straight down and holding both the place block trigger and jump button. This technique in survival will open up all kinds of other building techniques.
For the PC, my tip would be: don't start building stuff unless you have a bed. If you die away from your spawn point, you may never find your house again...
For the Xbox, don't explore your whole map, you can get new stuff from the updates if you leave an unexplored portion of the map.
never dig straight down? but, that's how i start my branch mining! yeah i know it is risky to dig straight down, but i go slow, keep sound up to listen for lava and take around 70 ladders with me (or a number equal to Y value on map) then if im lucky enough to escape firey death, it's ore galore!
What I do, dig down one block, then dig down two blocks beside the one you're standing on, hop into that hole and repeat untill you have a 2x1 block shaft. That way you're always digging with a solid block under your feet so if you hit lava, a ravine or something, you can always see it before you're falling in it. I always carry two stacks of ladders and build a shaft like this in the back of my houses for branch mining, lining both sides with ladders so people can come and go without shoving each other up and down.
As for one tip? Chop down tons of wood and make a stack of charcoal. Its nice to have a bunch of torches before you go down into caves where most of the real coal is.
Make sure to lower a Pokemon's HP to make it easier to catch. Inflicting a status condition like paralysis or sleep can make it even easier!
Ooops, wrong game. I would say make separate worlds for playing with others and playing by yourself. I'm pretty conservative with my stuff, and even though my friends are usually not bad with this, I have had people come in all gung-ho to work on a project, borrow a set of iron armor, take some resources and charge off into my nether to build something, only to have a ghast destroy the few blocks between them and a lake of lava....
enchant a diamond pick with fortune 3 ASAP!!!!! .......... I don't mine diamonds , red-stone or coal without it
uh... if you don't mine diamonds without a diamond pick, and you can't make a diamond pick without diamonds... Anyways, my advice would be a simple one. Be Prepared.

Multiplayer tip would be to hide your stash.

Wouldnt having a replacement be disrespectful too the Second one. Make a replacment for the 3rd. But wouldnt that mean..........
The diamond hoes back up each other's respect of course.
My tip: make a bed and go to sleep before sundown.
