To give myself a bit of a challenge boost, I decided to see how far I could get into the game (i.e. how much I could get built, how many diamonds I could find, etc.) while keeping myself limited to one double chest (or roughly the equivalent of one single chest plus my inventory). As I've gone along, I also developed a bit of a points system for different accomplishments within the game. So, if anyone is interested, the rules are:
1. Whenever you leave the game, you must be able to store EVERY item you have either in one double chest (with an completely emptry inventory) or one single chest with some items in your inventory. (ETA: This implies that you also cannot keep items stored in ovens when you leave the game. If you must leave the game while items are cooking, you must leave an emplty slot in your chest for those items, unless the items in the oven will completely stack onto the same item(s) that are already in the chest.) Keep in mind that you do have 9 more slots in the double chest than you do in a single chest with a full inventory, so using a double chest and emptying your inventory before you can leave the game each time gives you a little more room to work with. If, however, you want to make the challenge tougher, then use only a single chest and allow yourself to save and exit with your inventory on you. (ETA: As DMSiafu noted below, I got this completely reversed - If you want to make the challenge tougher, use a double chest and empty your inventory every time you leave the game.)
2. You cannot leave any items you see to despawn. You MUST collect them if you see them.
3. You cannot intentionally destroy items (e.g. by tossing them out of your inventory onto the ground to despawn or in water or lava or burning netherrack, etc.). To get items out of your inventory, you must use them for their intended purposes.
4. You can play in any mode you desire. Some modes will be more challenging than others. For example, in Peaceful, you have no way to dispose of food items.
5. You cannot just start the world and do nothing. Remember, the goal is to play the game to its fullest extent, build big, enchant and brew and get through to the END and beyond... all in one chest.
Points (subject to additional suggestions):
1. Build a home base that is at least 15 x 15 in area using only wood, stone and/or sandstone - 1 point.
2. Make it at least 50% clay brick - Add 4 points
3. With wall to wall carpeting - Add 1 point
4. Fully landscaped and decorated - Add 3 points
5. Provide a village with effective protection from future zombie sieges by making civic improvements to lighting, landscape and pathways and adding a protective perimeter wall - 5 points, make it 10 points if the village looks "pretty" and organized when you're done.
6. Build and enchantment room and enchant 3 different items - 10 points
7. Build a brewing stand and brew at least 3 different potions - 15 points
6. Build an automatic wheat farm - 15 points (Warning: best be careful testing it. Remember, you'll need to keep all the wheat and seeds in your chest).
7. Build a working mob trap - 15 points (Warning: Same applies for the drops here)
8. Make something using at least 25 sections of working redstone wiring - 20 points
9. Make a railroad at least 600 m long (but it doesn't have to be in a single direction or on a single track) - 25 points
10. Mine two entire stacks of diamonds - 25 points.
12: Build a working city with at least 10 buildings larger than 15 x 15 - 50 points
For later:
11. Complete your end portal and defeat the Endragon - 25 points.
... all while keeping all your supplies only in one chest!
I forgot that rule... you must also empty your ovens into your chest each time before you exit the game or have appropriate empty slots in your chest. You can make ovens and place them in the world, but you cannot keep them full.
Since its an individual challenge and I tend to live up to the promises I make to myself... I also don't tend to think of all the different ways other people might think of how to cheat themselves. There are, as a result, probably many things I've left open in the rules that would allow people to cheat themselves if they wish. The rules are merely suggestions... play it how you'd like.
I set up this challenge to cause myself to think about the game from a different perspective. In my previous survival world, I had collected a huge inventory of most things contained in about 10 chests. Since a single player doesn't really need to build very much to play the game, I had gotten into a habit of just mining and collecting and not building much at all. Forcing myself to keep my inventories low, causes me to build more; and I'm enjoying the game more than I had been.
So you have to pick everything up and use everything... Guess I'm not going mining then because I'll have 1000s of furnaces.
The 1000s of dirt blocks though, I'd use because I like to terraform

The emboldened section is untrue (you have it that backwards), a double chest has 6 rows of 9, holding a maximum potential of 3,456 blocks, while a single chest and your inventory hold a grand total of 7 rows of 9 (including your hot bar, which is just an interactive row of your inventory) bringing your total maximum holding potential to 4,032. Now those numbers only apply if every item you have can stack up to 64, but the premise is the same. (that's my comment on one little loophole i saw)
Other than that, seems like a fairly reasonable challange, but how does a minecart w/ a chest factor in? would you count that as part of the rail system, or would that need to be broken down and stored at the end of each session?

Hmmm... I'll have to check myself on that one. Thanks. (ETA: Yep, I miscounted... and since I've been using the double chest and empty inventory method, I've been tougher on myself when I thought I was being easier.... lol. Oh well, won't change it now eventhough I've just started brewing... dang potions don't stack.)
I would say that the minecart and chest could stay intact as a block in use similar to just leaving a regular minecart sit on the tracks at the end of the line (which I have always done rather than gathering them up and putting them in chests after each use); but the chest would have to be emptied into your main double chest or your inventory and single chest before leaving the game.
Only reason i know about the number of rows an inventory (including hot bar) holds, is in my one map, after an hour of collecting 2 full inventory's of stone or sand(stone) (including the hot bar), it all doesn't fit in a single double chest.
I like the sound of it all other than having to pick up everything you see, and not being able to destroy anything. I see the reason to have to pick up everything you see (otherwise you could just drop a lot of stuff on the ground and "store" it there) but not being able to destroy stuff would just suck.

Not being able to destroy stuff is what makes this challenge a challenge. It would be dead easy if you were allowed to just deep six everything into a lava pit at the end of the day. This way, you have to think of creative ways to use it up before your inventory gets too clogged up with the stuff.
are you able to use excess seeds/saplings as fuel? as long as you clean up excess when done...?
Yes, using saplings and anything else that will burn as fuel in a furnace is acceptable. I do use up a lot of excess fuels to make cobblestone into stone and find I am building a lot fewer things with just plain cobblestone these days as a result. The fuel cannot be left stored in the furnace, however, whenever you exit the game.
Might try that on one of my worlds then. hmm.. would be interesting to see how I build with a time limit per say...lol Anyway seriously though definitely would be a challenge.
