The first 30 or so MC days I build all my farms, houses etc above ground, only going underground to get supplies. Then, when i am happy with what I got above ground, I mine out a huge area at level 12 and then build all my farms, houses etc underground. But when it boils down to which one I will spend more time at, above or below, I would say underground.
I prefer above ground, but most of my houses usually end up with a small part above the ground and the rest in a large basement. I like above ground cause it feels like I'm really surviving in the wilderness, as opposed to living in a cave.

for me it doesnt matter. i live close the my friends that play with me. if they choose underground i live underground close by. if they live above ground a make a house close by.

Depends on the world, to be honest. If the world has an interesting features, I tend to build above ground, or in the sky. If it's kind of boring, or I end up in a field, I tend to hollow out a little cave, then expand it as I need.
I'm an above ground guy, I love exploring caves but there is, for me a much better experience above ground. Like that rush ya' get when you come out of a cave and it's night time and you need to rush to your house fighting off any mob who tries to get you and barley making it to your house. Love it.

hahaha any time that happenes i end up with 2 hearts or less when i make it to the house. as when i see zombies i stop my course to go kill them. usually a skeleton or creeper interupts the battle and thats how i lose hearts

Unless i find a 80%+ complete stronghold, it's 50/50 to whether i build above or below ground, though i usually start by finding a large hill/mountain dig into it for a base for the first 10-12 hours on the map (enough to gather a crap load of different building mats) then i'll build a 2 story house, and complete the rest of the complex below ground. I'll fully furnish it, but most times i end up back in my carved out mountain home (maybe i've been reading too many fantasy novels (i've only read 8 400+ page novels already this year) , i just can't help from going dwarf in MC.)
I normally mix it up, some worlds I make ridiculously huge houses, and others I go underground and live there. The world I'm currently in I've mined out a square room 69x69x12. I'm making a city down there that will allow you to survive exclusively underground.
i guess you could say i'm a 'hermit'. i prefer to build my houses into the side of a mountain.
here's a screenshot of my latest house. i'd say 8/10 houses i build are like this.
b4 i read what you typed i looked at the pic and thought you were suggesting why not build half above ground and half in a mountain(in a way in a mountain is underground).so 50/50

I usually spend most of the time above ground clearing land, gathering supplies, building structures, etc etc. I usually only go into caves for supplies and supplies only
Although I almsot voted for the underground part just because of the caption: " Im A Hermit I Like Living In Caves. "
It actually doesn't matter to me. I mean I spruce up villages in spare time...><
Most of the time now a days I having been building underground till I have a substantial amount of resources. Then I start to build around in both above and below. Once I have that base built that is when I look at the above ground and start building on it. Well sometimes. I do actually spruce up villages. Usually I have a look around seeing decent sights to build on before deciding what to do with it.
If I ever get inspired enough I will mess around with the above ground stuff. Well that and usually it is nice to build with the terrain. Now only if I could say that about my recent experience underground. >< last 3 maps that I generated and found a spot to make my base there just so happens to be not so many caves that I run into. And if it is a cave, it usually is a spring of water or lava. But at least it is something to get my gears moving...lol
Now only if I can make my wall into a survival map. I have been tinkering with an inspired Madnes64 style wall on a creative map... Made it in a way all my own design in a way, just a few things even look similar. That is only because I have in mind the idea of the wall, but with a lot of tweaks and modifications to it in making it all my own...:D

I am usually too scared to venture in a cave or even build a house underground because of my past experiences and my horrible luck. Maybe one day I will overcome my fears of the caves . . . . One day . . . .

I usually make my own well lit cave, my base I guess... I am always weary of caves, as I don't like creepers ninja me. That and well I prefer having some inspiration beyond the above ground terrain.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
My first few worlds I build little hovels with huge farms and such around them. Then I moved to elaborate above ground structures, I even built a huge "castle" in the water that reached max height - but ended up looking like an oil platform. Then a traditional castle style that was equally huge - but had a massive basement that got down to about 20 or so. My current see I just hollowed out a hill. The only way to tell I'm there at all is a huge window I build into a natural cliff and a fake tree I build on the top of the hill where my original entrance was (which is still an entrance but I almost never use it). I'm digging (pun intended) the underground living - no mobs wandering into my farms, no ninja-creepers sneaking up on me, etc.
Current place has at the top level the "living" quarters. Bedroom, alchemy lab, workshop, kitchen, enchanting room, and about a half-dozen empty rooms - not sure what I'll do with them. Next level, about 30 blocks high is the farm. I have about 60 trees, 64 tilled soil blocks, 30ish pumpkins, and 30ish spots waiting for melons. I also have about 40 blocks for cactus and cane.
Bottom level has my nether portal room, rail connection to my main mine (I have a huge plus sign shaped shaft heading north/south and east/west running the entire length of the map - branch mining off that now), animal pens and I'm constructing a mob spawning area now. Bottom level is about sea level on this map - so its a pretty good sized hill - but the mountains in this seed are huge, so it seems tiny. I'm thinking about extending my lair to a near by mountain with an ocean vista and repeating the process minus the farm and animal layers - just living quarters/crafting areas just for kicks.

I have built a couple of decent houses underground before, I thought they were pretty good for being deep in a cave, but sadly . . . . The creeper dis-agreed . . . .
