i have had the two chest thing happen. destroyed the original chest but didn't exit. the other chest was on the other side of the map. I explore the surface of my worlds extensively and map the world is one of the first things i dod to see if i want to play the map. i have not found this on every map (or maybe they are behind trees and i missed them). this may be a glitch but i can say it's not based on other people entering the game in my case. nobody had come onto the map and i'm playing offline and invite only.
This incident sounds like you may have spawned in and then exited without saving, thereby resetting the spawn to a different location. Even though you exit without saving, the chest from the first spawn remains generated and another chest generates at the second spawn point as well.
