With the unveiling of the PS4 yesterday, it makes me realize the next gen consoles are coming, and soon. And the problem here is I'm not going to be done playing minecraft before that time comes. So it makes me wonder if 4J Studios will look to port or develop a next gen version, or if they will even need to. Maybe the xbox live arcade will carry over to next gen, idk. I would be willing to pay for the game again, if it meant I could play it for another generation. I realize that I could just keep my current xbox to play, but it would be much easier to have it on the new console. And on next gen consoles, it could have much larger maps like PC.
Nobody knows right now. Microsoft's next console hasn't even been announced yet so there is no reason to wonder.
There would be many issues that they would have to get around first. 4J is not a big company. They probably wouldn't have enough people to work on two different versions of the game.
Oh my gosh! This never crossed my mind but they better or else... I will sacrifice a sheep!
Ok, no, I won't... but I'd be stuck going between two consoles with my games.
I think It will depend largely on whether the next Xbox platform has backwards compatibility or not. If it has full compatibility or its very easy to use the dev tools to port the code to the new platform then we will almost definitely see Minecraft in some form on it. Microsoft might also offer some sort of cloud streaming compatibility where the game runs on their servers and the video output is streamed to your console, but I'm more skeptical of that being practical as lag seems likely for most people.
If they do, I'm not going to pay another 1600 msp again.
Yeah, hopefully we won't and it will just stay tied to our gamertag. But even if we did have to pay again.... I would almost certainly end up giving in and doing it.
When the new xbox comes out, they'll make a much improved version of MC to take advantage of the improved performance. It will be "different" than MC as we know it now. Everyone will "upgrade" to the new xbox so they can play the upgraded versions of old games (and new ones) that can only be played on the new xbox. The current 360 will hang on for a little while, but eventually die off (and it's games) just like the original xbox did.
Every game developer is asking the same thing, and there's always the same answer: they have to make a new game (why dumb it down to run on both xbox's?), and then sell it to cover development costs. Yes, of course we'll have to buy MC all over again. You had to buy each version of Halo or Elder Scrolls, right?
I have no doubt that there will be a much improved MC720 (or Minecraft 2)…. and it will leave the PC version in the dust.
No brainer.
The real question is: what's gonna happen to the PC version? (Like I care….)
I agree with Geneo. His scenario makes the most business sense for the parties involved in the current porting agreement (Mojang, 4J and Microsoft). At some point, their focus will likely shift from updating this version towards producing a new version for the next gen console that will take fuller advantage of the strengths of that system (whatever they are going to be). There are hints about what is to come. I think the basic sandbox concepts in Minecraft are popular enough that they will make a game version for the next generation console; that is, sales of the current version have been good enough that the companies will want to continue with it. However, that next version may be vastly different (hopefully, improved) from the Minecraft version we are currently familiar with and it may not really be patterned off the PC version either. The hint for this are the statements made by 4J that they desire to take Minecraft in their own direction. However, it will bear at least enough of the elements of the old Minecraft that it will be recognizably Mojang's (the hint here is per statements made by Daniel Kaplan, of Mojang, at Minecon).
I'm looking forward to seeing what they do eventually come up with... it should be exciting.
First off, Micro$oft would not make it's hardware inferior to the PS4 because it would be commercial suicide. And yes, I would be more than willing to repay for the game. Xbox will sell at a loss anyways, why not make revenue off games. If the system comes with at least more ram than it takes to give the game that is more than the PC edition minimum requirements, it will overtake PC and be the dominant platform. They are limited due to people who have crappy computers, even some of the computers are alienware. They have to somehow make the game fit into 256 mb of ram because that is the minimum. 4J will have to fit the game into 4 Gb of ram, just because everyone's console is the same, so we will have more stuff, so Geneo, You are completely correct. It will leave PC in the dust.

What a factual post, full of credible sources!
I do think (keyword here) that a new version of MC will be released, but definitely not some ridiculous sequel titled Minecraft 2. I would hate to see a sequel to this game, there isn't really anything they could do to make it better. Games like this rarely have sequels, I would hope 4J and Mojang have too much pride to sink that low. That's something for games like Call of Duty, Black Ops 2 is basically just an updated version of the first Black Ops, they just slapped a number on it to get everyone buzzing and throwing their money around.
Console games will never exceed the PC equivalent, it has been that way for many years. PC and console releases will be equally intensive for about a year, then the PC ports of games will once again be better. The 8th generation of consoles are about the same, performance wise, as the high-end gaming PCs that are already out there. Time will pass, prices will drop, and PC gamers will once again have superior hardware. Some of them already do, with rigs that are under-utilized by any game on the market. A next-gen Minecraft would probably be on par with the PC version, not much more advanced, if at all.

The already stated goal philosophy of 4J, however, is to make the XBox edition different than the PC edition (i.e. go their own way), which would presumeably make it less directly comparable to the PC edition. "Better" is really a subjective opinion for anyone.
Mojang did state at Minecon that they want to keep Minecraft recognizeably their Minecraft... so you have two somewhat opposing development ideas already being presented to the public. Then you have Microsoft, looking for good game prospects to launch their new console and apparently with an exclusive agreement already in place regarding Minecraft. Enter the next gen console, which will be undisputably more powerful than the current Xbox. They would be absolutely foolish to just release the exact same game or a lame Minecraft 2 for the new console. Even with a larger world and the added "stuff" the PC now has, it just wouldn't provide eough incentive for people to buy the new version of the game (let alone purchase a new console to play it on). A PC copy for an old-tech console on its way out was a cheap way for Microsoft to try to revive some interest; but it's not enough to help launch a new console. IF (and I do say big IF) Minecraft is going to be made for the new console, it's going to have to be different enough and "advanced" enough from the currently available versions to entice people to buy it... again. IF the developers can't deliver on that, then probably it will just get shelved at whatever level this game is at whenever the new console is released and IF the next gen console has some backward compatibiliyt, we'll maybe still get to play it... otherwise, game over.
The Xbox 720 leaked specs (8 core processor radeon 8000 graphics card, 8gb of RAM) far exceed a 600 dollar gaming PC, so the full PC version could be used on the 720 and preform better than it does on the PC, and capable of running a better version of the game. It will be booting the windows 8 kernel though, and Notch already pointed out his views with Windows 8. So I'm not sure if they'll do it. But I hope they will.

The next gen 720 will have PCs beat for a good year or 2. Not everyone can afford a PC with the specs to match the 720. The 720 will be half the price of getting the same performance in a PC. With the average PC being a dual core 4gb of ram for now, the Console will be able to produce a much better version of the game. The only real question, is will the console be as security locked and the current generation of Xbox? I'm hoping mods for the game and add-ons from other players like the PC version and texture packs will be within the consoles reach.
Further into the topic of the Xbox 720, EA already said it will NOT be backwards compatible. Probably a security thing, but also a money thing. MS stopped making codes for the original Xbox the day the 360 hit, and stopped making accessories and games. They tried to push their old console off the market. With all these big titles that recently launched, and the ones in development now, it'd be a awful move for them to do it again. With the games, the price of the new system (Those specs won't be cheap), games still to come, I'd hope that they would make the smart move and continue to support the 360 fully for the next 3 years at least.

There really won't be any reason to have a 'port' for the next gen consoles, since those consoles will have 'java' enabled on them, hence they only need a 'mod' that can pick up controller inputs and pass correct keystrokes to work. In theory the next gen console should be able to run the PC version with little work involved other then a small mod.

Just so you know, none of the things you stated about Microsoft's next console are factual, merely speculation. Nothing is officially known about it, not even the name, (we do know the codename is Durango) which I hope isn't Xbox 720. That would be beyond ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, there is information out there backed up by strong evidence, but nothing is guaranteed. The leaked slideshow document I believe you're referring to has never been confirmed. I do believe it is real since Microsoft's legal team eliminated most traces of it fairly quickly. Even if it is real, it's two years old now, I'm sure a good deal has changed by now.
Also, there will never be mods or add-ons, other than those in the form of DLC. With every console generation, they do more and more to prevent this from happening. Then again, the 360 was rumored to be unmodifiable when it was released, look at how long that lasted. If you want an economic device with the freedom of a PC, and the user-friendly vibe, check out the Steam Box.
And consoles will never have PC's beat, ever, not even for a day. Most folks spend about a grand for a serious gaming rig, and that's not even what I would call high-end. The games won't even be superior to their PC counterparts. The 7th generation of consoles have been holding back PC gaming for years now. There are a lot of gamers out there who only own a few games that really show off the power of their hardware. Next-gen will simply give them games that meet their expectations. Games are not developed with the average PC in mind, they're created for high-end PC's, they just allow settings for players with inferior rigs to lower intensive effects. History will repeat itself, consoles aren't made in a cave somewhere by magical wizards, they're comprised of the same hardware as any other computer. The only difference is that the system is optimized and there isn't much worry about translation or protocol, hence why a console can accomplish so much with limited resources.
I don't know the exact terms that were agreed on when Notch joined up with MS. However, the MC we play on Xbox 360 is clearly called "Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition", not "Minecraft Microsoft Edition". Their agreement may not extend to the next gen Xbox. Notch may, or may not, want it to be exclusive to (or even on) the next gen Xbox. The idea of a direct, massively upgraded port to just the next Xbox sounds most plausible to me (I also think, to compete with the PS4, all Xbox 360 Arcade and downloadable games will be available on the next Xbox at launch).
Of course, this is all speculation. I could look like a blabbering fool a year from now :). Like always, we never know until they tell us.
The thing with backwards compatibility, the original Xbox did not have HD, while the 360 does. Picture can't get much better than HD, so the 720 will have HD too. That allows more backwards compatibility. Graphics can't get much better unless an implant to the brain is there. 1080i and 1080p are almost the best it can get. If xbox 720 can get the kind of frames per second a computer twice the price can get, then consoles will take over, because it will be the same thing for half the price. On an off topic post I saw, someone said that "Playing on a console is a voyage through retardation" almost in those exact worlds. If the console can perform as good, he will look like an idiot, and this will be popular. PC hardware can't advance much past how far it advanced, and if consoles can get there, consoles will rise up and take over, and PC will fall inferior because of it's ridiculous price which is twice that of a console that can perform just as well. Once again, PC games are limited because people have crappy computers. If everyone's machine is the same, there will be no limitations. It will take over PC gaming.

Whether a console can display in HD or not is not the deciding factor in backward compatibility.
The PS4 is not backwards compatible with PS3 games. The reason being because it runs a completely different Operating System and has an entirely different architecture inside it. PS3 games are coded and made to run with the PS3s Cell Processor. Because the PS4 does not have a Cell Processor, PS3 games cannot be played on it. The only way to achieve backwards compatibility on the PS4 would have been to add the Cell Processor alongside the new processor. Which would have made the price skyrocket.
Once again, PC games are limited because people have crappy computers. If everyone's machine is the same, there will be no limitations. It will take over PC gaming.
I have to disagree with this to a certain degree.... The reason PC games are limited is because of consoles. I am primarily a console player, although I have a great gaming rig, so this is not biased but hear me out.
There are certainly many games that are PC exclusive, however those alone are not enough to sustain the PC gaming market, so there are the multi-platform games to make up for that. These games are developed along side the console version and in certain areas they are improved due to PC power, however the developers are not going to pour a lot of extra resources to make a superior version for PC, when they have 2 other platforms to cater to as well, so the versions result in being very close to the same.
And the comment that it is because of crappy computers that PC games are limited, console gamers face the same hurdles when a new generation of consoles come out. Oh, you want to play the new Xbox360 game, but you only have an Original Xbox? Time to upgrade. Same goes for PC. Don't have a good enough video card or enough RAM to play? Time to upgrade. If someone calls them self a PC gamer and that is their platform of choice, they will not have a "crappy" computer. It is the casual crowd that only plays games like Minecraft that have this issue, and Mojang wants to appeal to them as well.
Many PC gamer's along with myself have PC's that cannot even show their full capabilities because of the limited number of games that actually push it. That being said though, PC gaming can be very expensive if you want to stay ahead of the pack, but in reality, there isn't a need to, until there are more games that can make use of it, and I think we will start to see that during the next generation of consoles. PC and consoles are always neck and neck at the start of a new generation, but as time passes, PC begins to drift ahead, and that is inevitable when technology advances, but a device cannot be upgraded, such as a console. As time passes in a consoles lifespan, its all about how well the console's software can be optimized.
And consoles will never "overtake" PCs. In time, if the changes to current consoles are any indication, PCs and consoles will start becoming closer and closer to the same, as the line between what makes them so different from each other continues to blur.
Thoughts?
