Hey people. I'm new here and kinda new to minecraft. I downloaded the xbox360 version a couple weeks ago.
So here are my questions:
1: is there a good and fast way to find diamonds, and if so, how far underground should i look?
2: does anyone know when the next update is?
and thats all the questions i have for now.
1. There is no sure fire way to find diamonds. They only appear at y: 16 and below, so searching at about y:10 is your best bet.
2. No, sometimes 4J has given us a heads up, and sometimes not. So far nothing official about a release is out.

1. From the Wiki: "Diamond is only found in the lower 16 blocks (above bedrock), though statistically (see diamond ore) the optimum level is at Y 12. The best strategy to find diamonds is the branch mining method. Branch mining is the best way to look for diamonds because it exposes the most surface area, and also requires the least amount of mining." Although the Wiki is mostly written about the PC version this information regarding diamonds also applies to the Xbox edition.
The best way to find diamonds in Minecraft (as in finding almost anything in life) is to get in there and actually search for it. Do a bunch of mining or caving below level 16 and you'll eventually find some.
2. No, no announcement has been made. 4J normally tweet an announcement when an update goes to Microsoft for certification testing. Release of an update only occurs AFTER Microsoft have tested and certified it.

k, thanks. I found a few diamond using the branch mining thing a few days ago, i just wasn't sure if that was the best way. thanks though.

I do a bit of both and have found several diamonds both ways. In one world where I've done mostly branch mining, I have a stack and a half and in another where I've done mostly caving, I also have a stack and a half. I have found that many areas of the current worlds have a lot of lava at Y12 and below, so I often find my branch mining efforts below Y12 get cut off by encountering lava very quickly. In those areas of the map, I prefer to search caves at level Y12 or Y13 (if y12 - using a bucket of water to turn the lava lakes into obsidian) and just walking along where they usually interconnect. The trick to finding interconnected caves is by "digging" for them" also. Break a few blocks in the cave walls. Often there is another massive cave just a block or two away.
It depends on how long you want to play on that map. I like going to the center of the map, digging a shaft down to y=12 I think (which ever level puts you right on top of the lava layer), then dig a 3x3 shaft out from the center to all four sides of the map. This is done with stone picks, gives a decent amount of initial resources and should give some diamonds. Then I do a few 1x2 shafts from those center shafts to the edge of the map until I get a decent amount of diamond and don't have to worry about it, from then on I just use diamond tools. Eventually I do a 3x3 tunnel around the perimeter of the map, have rail around in that tunnel and the four main 3x3 tunnels going to the perimeter. That way I never have to walk more than a few feet when going on mining trips.
EDIT: Oh and the central shaft going down is 6x6 with a 2x2 shaft in the middle with ladders on all four sides, and rail going down on the outside of the shaft.

This sounds like an interesting method. I'll have to give it a try. It did take me a little while to understand your post though because in mining terminology, a vertical or near-vertical hole is a "shaft" and a horizontal tunnel is usually not referred to as a "shaft" but rather as a "drift." (PS: I'm not trying to be critical of your grammar and such... just trying to confirm: Are the 3x3 shafts you're referring to in the part I've highlighted dug out directly horizontally from your main 6 x 6 shaft?)

I didn't know that terminology, yeah the 3x3 are dug horizontally, so they would be considered "drifts". Thanks for the info. I should have just said 3x3 tunnels and then it would have made sense. The 6x6 shaft is vertical with the center the four blocks at x0y0, x0y1, x1y0, x1y1. The 3x3 tunnels I keep right across from each other, since they are 3x3 they are off center from the central shaft a bit. Sometimes I do the main tunnels 2widex3high instead and keep them centered, but if you do that you have to keep the rail next to one of the walls rather than down the middle.

Even when they do it's very broad, except for when they announce that it will be released in several hours. They usually Tweet when the update goes to cert testing, which takes roughly a week, give or take. After which they send out another Tweet when cert testing is finished and the update is on the verge of being sent out in a matter of hours. Note that some players will get the update sooner than others due to regional differences.
P.S. The fastest way to find diamonds is in the creative menu... (Sorry, I had to. :P)
First off if you want to be lazy recreate the map you have and make it on creative. Then search the lower levels and write down the coordinates.
Now for another interesting trick get a pickaxe with Fortune III on it. Then find some diamonds and save your game. After you do that break one diamond block. If it gives you 4 diamonds save your game and go to another one. If it doesnt reload your game and try again. I found 5 areas with a total of 26 blocks pretty close to each other and I did the trick. It took about 45 minutes, but I got just over 100 diamonds and that should last me a very long time. I hope this helps you out.

If only it didn't take so long to save and reload constantly. lol But I would do it if I have absolutely nothing better to do.

Makes sense... and it might be nice to have some recognizable quandrant boundaries underground for a change. Thanks.

Lol... I do have to concede on that one.
