First off, when this all happened i did not have a good internet set up. I was using AT&T (do not recommend), with a wireless hook up to the modem through an adapter in my Xbox. So when i would play over multiplayer, i would constantly be the source of ridicule because i would lag everybody out of the party and the map. Was not fun. So one night, me and a buddy were chillin on minecraft when all the sudden he drops off the map. The floor just opens up as hes running cause the map hadn't finished rendering. So hes floating in space in the middle of my map (i have NO idea where he is) when he looks up at the wall of stone and dirt where he fell off and sees 2 diamond deposits. He told me about them and took a picture with his phone and sent it to me. I got excited cause i hadn't been able to find any diamonds yet and i was pretty far into building and mining. So i start examining the picture and can barely make out any objects at the surface that i would be able to map out the location of these diamond deposits. The only thing i knew was that they were right beside a very deep gorge with 2 caves right above them. i started searching my map over and under but couldn't locate the gorge until about an hour into searching. i finally found the gorge and was able to match up the cross section i could see in the picture to the part of the gorge where i needed to dig. I found the first cave (complete with a spider spawner) then hit the second cave. It took me another 45 min to dig in the right direction but i finally found the 2 deposits. I was so thrilled, i took pictures of both and sent them back to my friend who was amazed that i had been able to find them based off of a picture he took of his TV from his cell phone. I actually have the pictures of this adventure but couldn't figure out how to post them on this forum. >.>
It was pretty exciting finding diamond when you first start the game. But now when I start a new map I often have a decent amount an hour into playing the map, and I've lost so many hundreds of pieces (in the form of armor) from dying, it just doesn't mean all that much. I remember one of the first nights I played I died and lost 4 diamond and 4 gold, as well as an iron pick. I was so ed I didn't play for an hour or so and just watched my friends play. Now I won't even bother getting some diamond that is half the way up the side of a ravine out of laziness:)
I remember my first encounter with a Diamond block. I was exploring a cave, mining away mercilessly, escaping the wraths of mobs like those random creepers that wait for you to come around the corner and eat you, anyways.. I was ran into it, it just seemed to sit there as all blocks do, it glistened with some sort of sparkly stuff that was actually just a figment of my imagination to create a nice feeling that I just discovered diamonds. I mined at with a smile on my face and ran toward the surface afterwards only to be met up by an infamous outlaw known as an Enderman . . . . . . . . To be continued
The story above is true except the Enderman part ^_^, all that matters is that I found a block of Diamond and I slept well that night.
Well, even before they fixed that glitch *cough cough*, I was always excited for diamonds. I have lots now but I still get a smile on my face when I find it in my mine/rail shafts.
But nothing beats that feeling you get after finding diamonds
and then falling into lava with it in your inventory... Absolute devasation
It is pretty cool that you found the diamonds just from the picture, but couldn't you have strip mined for an hour and found more goodies?
Lol i probably could have, but i was determined to find those diamonds. When i found out they were there, the challenge of finding them was just to tempting to pass up.
That must be a very low ravine with diamonds half the way up. Do such small ravines exist at all?!
Maybe not halfway up, but I know on my current map one of the underground ravines I sometimes go through has some diamond showing that I don't bother with getting. I have a stack of diamond blocks already (9 stacks of diamonds) so I don't really go out of my way for them. Only really mining at this point to try and find a stronghold (this is a map on PC)

Nah, he was more excited that i actually found them than actually using them in a world he would never be in again.

This is the picture my friend took when he fell. The Diamonds are obviously to the left.
This was after i found the first set.
And this was the second one.
That is quite the find!
