My villagers must be deeply disturbed... I started a world a few days ago and set up shop in one of the smaller village houses that had no door on it. The village had a single villager wandering nearby and I assumed it was his house. However, since he seemed to have no interest in going back inside it, I decided he wouldn't mind if a slapped a door on it and used it as a base while I built my own place.
Well, I guess the effect of moving into his home must have depressed him more than I thought.
Try #1: There is an open, deep vertical shaft near the village and I was trying to rescue a sheep that had spawned on the sides a few blocks down from top. I have built a set of single stairs along the one wall when the villager decided to join me on the ledge. In fighting to stay on, I accidentally pushed the villager off the ledge.
Well, I was so distraught that I decided to do something I normally would never do in a pure survival world - I exited without saving to restore the villager back to life, paying the penalty of having to rebuild as section of my house since that work was lost by not saving it.
Try #2: As before, a sheep was spawned on the ledge a few blocks down from the top. I thought I'd try a different approach by first covering most of the hole and blocking the stairs at the top so the village couldn't join me on the ledge... at least that was the idea. However, as I approached the hole... still about 3 blocks away... the villager just leaped over the edge and disappeared into the depths.
Again, overcome with grief for my apparently suicidal villager, I contemplated another exit without saving. However, before I hit the button, I took a look down into the hole... HE LIVES... but now how do i get him back to the surface?
I believe villagers will always be derpy...sadly....but they do bring hours of rage and enjoyment when working with them. Basically if there are any drops...or any place you can get stuck....villagers always seem to find them.
I do hope your villagers in the future are more satisfied with the move. You may not want to inform them of past...accidents.
Villagers are strange. In one of my villages, all but one of the villagers are stuck in the well.
Wells I usually just fence of per say... but they tend to wander far if you have not made a camp for them; ie surrounding the village with fence and such...lol I don't usually do that as I don't mind them wandering, but mostly they stay inside...

Maybe it has something to do with the CreepyPasta: Squidward's Suicide? Get it? Because villagers look like Squidward? Anyways, back on topic. I think there is a bug with the villager's AI, so that's probably why they tend to be more stupid then usual.
You sound like the superhero of Minecraft is all I have to say. Mine on!
Nah, a superhero would have been able to stop him from jumping... I had two tries at it and failed both times; plus, I exited without saving the first time and cost myself a bunch of extra work and he probably didn't die the first time either.
I checked on him tonight and he's still wandering around aimlessly in the bottom of the hole which is about a 6 x 6 square. When I get a chance to play again later in the week, I'll cut a staircase to the bottom to see if he'll ever just wander back up to the surface on his own.
Leave him in the water pool and wait for the next update. Then when the update comes out run as quick as you can to him and trade your feather falling boots to get the sword off him so he doesn't kill himself and he won't get hurt when he falls.
Is there any way to guide him up a set of stairs you build from the bottom of the hole? Then, you can at least get him back to the upper ground, near his village.
I once found a village and decided to open all the doors to "let them out" into the village so that they could be free. Instead, they didn't stay in the village... but went out to sea--the village was about 20 blocks from the ocean--and I haven't been able to get them back on shore since then... I still feel awful about that
Haha, I've always called my villagers Gonzo (from the Muppets)..
I had about 5-6 villagers in the village I set up camp in. I was there for probably 10 game days while I built my own home/farm. During this time they all jumped into the water well in the center of the village and they all still remain there. Now when I approach the village I hear a practically constant splashing sound that gets very annoying when staying there.

In my first surivival world after the update, I made the mistake of opening up the doors and letting the villagers out. They all ran away like escaped convicts, so this time around I decided I would leave the doors on any of the houses that had them closed. I've even placed a block in front of them so that when the zombie sieges happen, the zombies won't be able to get at them. Gonzo is a good name for them.
I actually don't think there is a way to guide/lead a villager yet even on the PC. Trying to push my leaper back up out of the hole the first time (so I could get back up to surface myself) certainly didn't work out too well. I was sort of hoping that if I just made the staircase to the bottom of the hole that eventually he might just climb out on his own; but from what I'm reading, that seems pretty unlikely. I could go to all the trouble of laying tracks and pushing him into a minecart; but I'm considering just building him a little house inside the hole and giving him a door to play with for when they learn to open doors in a future update. Then, maybe I can trade with him down there.

Well, I've cut a set of stairs so that they aren't exposed to the hole (i.e. not a ledge). So up is really the only way he can go anywhere at all. We'll see if he figures it out over time and resurfaces. If not, I'll go back down and cut a little house out for him into the side of the hole... and give him a door he can play with when the next update roles out. There is an bit of an opening at the bottom of the hole that opens up into a huge ravine.... for now, I've kept it blocked off so he won't be contemplating "going off the deep end" again.

I missed that part about gonzo in Lilikoi's post.... That is an interesting thing to call the villages... They are weird like him... that is one of my favorite muppets...:D
Anyway i actually like the idea of you building a house down there for it... You could even expand the ledge by digging into the ledge, so there is a stair well or staircase leading down to him that connects it to the village. Kinda like a hermit being set aback from the village a bit, but still being part of the village...:D

How bout a rope/bucket and a sign that says "it puts the lotion in the basket"?
You can "nudge" villagers and get them where you want them to go. Its annoying and takes forever but I "rescued" at least a half dozen from the nearby ocean in my survival map. You can also trap/move them mine carts so my next move was to go to the closes village, trap all 13 inhabitants and relocate them to my village.

Oh, I know I could nudge him up the stairs now... but I'm sort of waiting to see if he will "decide" to climb them himself. Beyond that, like Tamorr said, I'm beginning to really like the idea of having an underground hermit in my village. Plus, if I decide to do up some sort of base down in the ravine I just found connected to his "hole," it'll be nice to have someone to trade with without having to resurface to the village all the time. I could maybe make him a minecart station attendant.

They look derpy so why not? :3
Also most of my villages seem to get destroyed by creepers somehow (before I turn mobGriefing off) or swarmed with zombies. Never have I ever had a village with any sort of Chasm or Cliff.

that would be easy now that we have cauldrons... do a stack of single fences down, put a sign on the last one, and have the cauldron under it (filled or unfilled)

that is what I call one gutsy villager...><
Well maybe getting a minecart and rail him out? and then put him in a house with a door...:D Maybe that will keep him from taking the dive...

It is little things like these that makes for a good inspiration to build around and incorporate it into the surroundings...:D
I aghast (not seriously). However, I'm curious... is there a penalty for murder in Minecraft? or do you get XP when you kill a villager?
