Mining vs. Cave exploring. Which one do you prefer? I like mining better, because one: the entrance to the mine is right inside the safety of my house and two: you don't have to worry about mobs creeping up behind you and giving you a heart attack. I always feel like I am missing a key feature of Minecraft without exploring caves though. The ambience noises and the creepers can get to your head.
I do a bit of both. I will usually make a mine somewhere and then explore any caves I come across. Alternately, if I spawn near any cave systems I'll explore them first and start branch mining at any dead ends I find. Sometimes I prefer making my own mine because (in addition to what you said about a safe entrance) I don't have to worry about getting lost and having to mine my way to the surface or spend an hour trying to get back.

I personally rather make a mine because it's hard to get out of some of the caves I find myself in. At least with a mine I've got my rail system set up and I can find my way back somewhere rather easy. But exploring caves is fun, just not to dig in!

i do both, but i MUCH prefer mining. for some reason i realllllllllllllly enjoy just mindlessly digging. i always dig tunnels across the entire map.
since the last few updates there seems to be way too many caves. like 80% of the underground is cave. before it was a rare/exciting thing to come across a cave while i was mining. now it's like "ugggggggghhhhh ANOTHER CAVE?!".

That's exactly it. I get so frustrated mining in caves because every other ore vein opens another cave system...

Actually I do both... Some of my caves are integrated into my base with a safe entrance.... After all that is what a door or 2 are for no? I also make a mine for branch mining purposes, mainly when I am looking for specific ores and such. Also there are times I do a 3rd or 4th type of mine which is above ground, usually a quarry of some kind (sand, sandstone & cobble).
Of course the latter part is not so safe, but that is what day time is for. I actually do many things with mines and rails as well... Which leads to there being several types and more places to investigate for ores & other block types.:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
If you build a quarry, then place a fence around it. Should keep the baddies out.
nah... I tend to expand beyond the borders for that to happen, at least with a sand quarry.. I build up and around the quarry to make it look like it belongs there. Moving from site to site will make a mining civilization pop on the map...lol
Besides I kind like the idea of only going to the quarry during the day, and into the tunnels at night among other things. I have a habit of eventually having everything needed to build and survive all underground.

about half and half. i prefer mining in the begining of the game until i can upgrade to a diamond sword and can enchant armor.
when caveing i'll use lava or fence walls to cover my back or i'll run with a couple of dogs. those damn creepers though... i wish dogs would at least bark at them to warn you.

I am actually quite tired of the amount of caves there are... some times I wish I could find a decently sized piece of land to build underground mob spawning pads without having to worry about mining into a cave system...
I'm a chronic cave explorer. I can't help myself. Even when I'm on a different mission (like a trip to gather wood or whatever) if I pass a cave it's really hard to not go inside. Then I immediately get lost because I'm so busy running around excitedly throwing down torches and exploring new areas that I forget to keep track of where the exit is. XD I love it though. There's nothing like rounding a dark corner and seeing an enormous sprawling cave or ravine outlined in the darkness ahead.
Doesn't mining pretty much require you to explore caves? Most times the ores are in caves... that you have to explore... in order to find them...
I think they're talking about just digging into solid ground to create a mine, rather than harvesting ore from caves. My friends tend to mine that way, but it seems like a waste of energy to me. I'd rather just run through a cave and harvest all the visible ore than dig a tunnel in a random direction and hope to hit something good. *shrug*
I do both. It depends if you are looking for materials for a specific project, in which case I mine a tunnel. If Im bored of building and just want to explore I go down into a cavern and have a dig about. Its easy to get out of a cavern, just dig a set of stairs up until you exit the underground. I always fill in the top though so I dont fall down it accidentally or just make a hut around it.

To make matters worse though is dropping..... all of it...... in the lava. I mean come on man I had a diamond pickaxe with a level 24 enchantment!
