I've been trying to yield a decent income of wool from my ranch in my world, but it seems to move slower then I would have hoped.
Obviously sheep don't regrow wool yet, so for now the only thing i can think of is to breed a lot of sheep, shear them all, breed them again for a new generation and kill the sheared sheep. rinse and repeat.
Sounds good in theory but then the silly animal/breeding cap comes into play and as a result this process moves very slowly as you need to wait for the babies to grow before you kill off a generation and shear the new one beginning the process all over again.
I'm not looking for an absurd amount of wool but I would like 6 or 7 good stacks of it, so i'm just wondering if anyone has particularly efficient methods, or if i just need to make do and wait until sheep can eat grass to regrow wool.
I honestly just go to a plains area and go crazy shearing and killing sheep. They spawn fast enough that almost every time you turn around there are more.

Soon as the update arrives you shouldn't need to worry about this anymore as sheep should regrow their wool. 4J says that next update is 1.1 with a few things brought forward, that means sheep will regrow their wool.

Yeah, it's funny how such a small addition makes it so much easier to get wool. You can color a sheep and shear it forever so you don't to waste your dyes, and if you have 30+ sheep you can get stacks of wool and a matter of minutes! It's a shame this simple yet important feature couldn't have been brought forward when breeding was introduced. It just seems so vital to the whole point of ranching sheep.
Personally since i have complete control over spawning on my map including passive I don't have much of a problem with wool. If My passive mob spawner is active it can easily generate a stack of wool in about 15 mins, not to mention cooked pork, steak and chicken, as well as some feathers.
I shear and then beat every sheep I see with a stone sword.
It works fine if you don't live on...the hills and have those random ponds and caves covered up.

I have not located any spider spawners but I may have to try your method of running around fields killing them.
