I am trying to make an item pusher to push the drops from my mob farm into an afk stream, (water will not work because it reduces the fall damage that the mobs take) and my plan as of now is to use four rows of pistons to move the items down in a stair-like pattern shown below,
Side View. P= piston S= stream

If anyone could offer a way of wiring them or has any other design ideas for moving the items I would appreciate it.
Btw I have plenty of resources so lots of repeaters aren't a problem.
why not try a sticky piston pushing a regular piston. place the pistons on the back wall of where the mobs will fall. They dual piston action will cover two blocks. I'll try and draw a diagram similar to yours.
Couldn't you just use a fence above the water stream, or iron bars. The items fall through most of the time. Just make sure you have air blocks in all four directions of the fence...
B=block, A=air block, F=Fence.

Just have the stream below the fence post. This is assuming of course you are using a 1x1 drop chute. You may not get 100% ratio on items, but you will get probably 90+%. This is also assuming your drop kill spills out a decent amount of mobs.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I'm sorry, I should have been more clear, it is a 2 X 60 drop area without any walls (so that spiders cannot grab onto the walls to avoid damage).
So the previous solutions will not work, but thank you for your input anyway.
If the drop is far enough, you can have them land in water and they would die. The damage negated by the water wouldn't matter and they would die anyway.
Did everyone forget about lava blades? Without an actual chute, pistons would be quite inefficient. The drops have a larger area in which they could land. You could also drown the mobs. It takes awhile, but you don't lose any items to the lava.
Thanks to everyone who replied, capt scallawag came on my world and showed me a way to power all the pistons with redstone torches.
I used to have a lava blade on the mob systems, but changed it out in order to increase the spawn rates.

Reference: X=Walls/stone (whatever you want) R=Regular Piston S=Sticky Piston s=stream r=restone dust (wiring) T=redstone torch (always on) O=open space.
Wire all this up to a clock set at a fairly slow speed, and you should be all set. Its also pretty cheap.
