Just because you say "its only an opinion", doesn't mean your not trying to force it down our throats. You play how you want to play. Don't tell me that my method is wrong because you believe it's wrong based on your personal honor code.
A spawn block is nothing more than a resource. How you choose to use it, or not use it... is up to you. It's no worse than creating yourself an infinite water source. Granted you don't get XP from it, but you still take advantage of an in-game mechanic. It's not like a mob trap comes naturally. It's something you got to build.

You can't sit here and say I'm trying to do something that I am not trying to do. I'm simply telling you how I feel about the option because Its a forums.
I'm not trying to change the way or Insult anyone In any type of way, All I'm saying Is I DON'T APPROVE of your actions. All there is to it.

Personnaly i consider spawn traps cheating you just sit there gaining exp and drops infinitely you dont do any work AT ALL. I hit level 30 in about 3 MC weeks the old fashion way a bow a few arrows leather armor and a stone sword. and when its night i would climb a mountain search for glowing red eyes (spiders almost always travel with skeletons on my worlds) so i can kill them get a few more arrows daylight hits i hunt some creepers with the newly gained arrows then get meat from chickens pigs cows and then repeat.
Have to disagree on that! Think of it like a honey farm, We make the bee's come to us!
After having a world for so long one would be dumb not to make some of these! You get more done that way!
I like to do big projects and part of that is having the materials needed or wanted on hand. Who would want to hunt for weeks just to get some TNT for a project? Not me, I'll just hit up my farm for a minute and move on with my work!
Having Farms will make it so you get more done! I still hunt just not as much now that I'm rich.
Same with the xp.. Get way more done!
I almost feel bad for the people that don't understand the point of farms.
Why the rush to level 30? Exp farms arent useful if you still have to go farm your materials to enchant unless you are using creative to get them in which case its no point in compairing people who dont use creative mode. Its all apples and oranges.
You can get off your high horse, also. If you think there's some sort of "honor code" to playing this game, don't force it on the rest of us.
If someone were to put a block that spawns infinite enemies on my front porch in real life, but there was a benefit to keeping it around... I'd find a way to block it off to take advantage of it, too.
Well that was just uncalled for... I understand your first post as to the high horse, but not this one.
I wouldn't call It Cheating But Its nothing to be proud of. There's no work Involve "stated" Unlimited Items "stated" Hunting down mobs also test the skills of your survival gameplay. Who am I to judge though? Its only an opinion
That's about as polite, and humble as can be.... sheesh. He's not forcing anything at all, and being kind. It is true, the only work involved in a mob farm is making it. After that there is no work, unless someone considers standing in one place collecting loot 'work'.
The way I see your second post, you're on a high horse of calling people out on high horses... Your first post made sense.
How exactly is funneling enemies to specific point, cheating? It's one of the oldest strategies in the book. Hell, they made the movie, 300 based on that exact principle.
If it's good enough for the Spartans, it's good enough for me.
Get off your high horse.
It just doesn't seem as legitimate as actually going out and hunting the mobs.

So go hunt the mobs, if that's your preferred method... just don't tell us that what we're doing isn't legitimate because we take advantage of a resource.
Aside from the XP gain, how is mob farming any different than creating your own wheat/watermelon/pumpkin farm, trapping animals for resources, or creating infinite water blocks? Maybe you should go out and find/hunt those resources instead of creating yourselves an infinite way of getting food, leather, wool, etc. It's hypocritical to say it's not legitimate to mob farm, but create other types of farms to get huge suppies of resources yourselves.

These are all common things In minecraft...Think about what you just said " how is mob farming any different than creating your own wheat/watermelon/pumpkin farm " There Is an achievement for making a hoe for farming, Meaning it was Implanted in the game. Alot of people wonder why there drop pits don't work as good anymore, Its because they would prefer people not to earn items/EXP that way. Now lemme get to the side of the story where your right. There Is a block that allows monsters to spawn "The mob spawner" Do as you please on how you wanna use It, But I don't think people Intended others to make a trap that loots. I may be wrong. That's your style of playing mincraft I can't judge you for that I just wouldn't Prefer It. Once again I do not approve...Whatever Is fun to you go ahead. That's whats its all about right? Having fun,But for some reason you keep ignoring the fact "Its My OPINION"

think about it its like entering a game and sitting there getting drops and exp and all you do is break 2 blocks of dirt while your waiting and not just fnneling them in one place it also kills all of them for you so it is just bassically cheatin. and really high horse?
and about 300 atleast THEY had to FIGHT them instead of just SIT there doing NOTHING thats my point >_>

but think about it you cant just get seeds and plant them walla you have an infinite supply of food. No it doesnt work like that (dont know what minecraft you have been playing) you have to 1. get the supplies to build a farm (i usually have a wood walkway and fencing to keep it from being stepped on and ruined) 2. you need a hoe and duh the seeds 3. you have to water the plants 4. you have to farm them or they just sit there and grow and then do nothing. and even if you could manage to take 5 steps to harvest them then you have to replant and repeat. then your theory IIIII 1. make a mob trap 2. do absolutely nothing but stand in one spot for 2 hours doing the lazy way of getting exp and drops. seriously hunting mobs isnt that hard... well. as long as you know what your doing
(not sitting in one spot with a blank expression getting assaulted by monsters)and the animal farms same thing but no how water or seeds. First you have to catch them and its not like them sitting there is like farmville where all the milk and ect is automattically flying into your chests.hoe)
using setup with a zombie spawner and it take me roughly 20-23 mins to get to 30
seems slower than other times, am i doing something wrong? is there a better/faster method?
don't think any are dying in the tube or the fall
which blaze farm setup is best to use?
The problem here is not that there is a difference of opinion. The problem is that calling someone a "cheater" is inflammatory.
If the original comment had been along the lines of "I don't agree with making mob traps, I think it defeats the point of the game", that would have probably been fine. Calling it "cheating" and "illegitimate" is just asking for argument. That's less stating an opinion about play styles than making a value judgement on the people who choose to play the game differently.

Isn't this also a rather sweeping assumption about what the developer intended by adding more caves into the game (which is the primary reason spawn rates in mob drop traps have fallen off). Also, it's really not your position to approve or disapprove of whatever someone else is doing in their own single-player worlds. The question was how long it takes people, using whatever method, to get to 30 levels of XP. Can we please get back to the topic.
Using my mob spawner traps it take me between 15 to 20 minutes to get 30 levels of XP; whereas, by hunting in the overworld at night in the open, it takes me several minecraft days. Conversely, I can reach 30 levels in about 45 minutes my hunting passive mobs in the overworld during the day. So, if I'm in a hurry to enchant, I turn first to my mob spawner trap. If I have no immediate need to enchant, I'll do other things, including hunting for hostile mobs in the overworld at night. I have fun either way.

There was probably 1 person who called this cheating...I made sure I didn't do that
reads topic and notes aregument; ill just sum up this in one sentance.
YOU PLAY MINECRAFT YOUR WAY; So people prefer to hunt only at night, others prefer to make the mobs come to them. Thats the great thing about minecraft, as its a sandbox, you do things your way, not anyother persons way.
Like some people play with mods, other just pure vinillia minecraft, others only lightly tap in to such as only NEI.
Minecraft is yours to shape and play.
OT: Ussaly i go mining for my levels, up till im auto mining via Mods. after that its night time hunting till i get a 7*7 area of chunks mined to bedrock, then i build a spawner in the middle of that area

There Is an achievement for making a hoe for farming, Meaning it was Implanted in the game.
There's an achievment for attacking and destroying a monster. It doesn't say how to go about doing it. How can you be so sure that trapping it wasn't intended? By your logic, my mob trap is implanted in the game. On the flip side, there's an achievement for catching a cooking a fish, do you think they intended for you to get it by digging a 2 block deep hole and casting a line into it? Probably not, but people do it despite there being large bodies of water on nearly all worlds. There's also an achievement for befriending 5 wolves. What's to stop someone from befriending 2 and then breeding the rest? Nothing.
Whatever Is fun to you go ahead. That's whats its all about right? Having fun,But for some reason you keep ignoring the fact "Its My OPINION"
And yet, here you are... time and time again... basically saying that the opinion of people creating mob traps is wrong. If you don't want people telling you your opinion is wrong, then stop telling us that ours is wrong.

Then please... explain how you must replant watermelon because last time I checked, as long as the stem was still there, it regrew on it's own.
you have to
1. get the supplies to build a farm (i usually have a wood walkway and fencing to keep it from being stepped on and ruined)
We gotta get the supplies to build a mob farm... cobblestone, dirt, glass, etc.
2. you need a hoe and duh the seeds
We need to find a mob spawner or risk death building very high platforms...your point is?
3. you have to water the plants
Ummm... no you don't. I have a watermelon farm in the nether... and you can't place water in the nether. You can even grow wheat without water in the 360 version. It just works better when you have water. Got anything better?
4. you have to farm them or they just sit there and grow and then do nothing.
You have to hack away at mobs and kill them to get the XP.
and even if you could manage to take 5 steps to harvest them then you have to replant and repeat.
Umm... when do you need to replant watermelons? They regrow on their own as long as you don't step on the stem.

I've already proven to you that you have no clue what is involved in mob farming. You should educate yourself before making such a post.

I've got a word for you to look up: "context". Words take on different meanings depending on the context they are used in. Did you actually misunderstand what the OP meant when he said "legitimate', or do you just like arguing semantics for no reason?
I don't usually like to argue semantics, but do you?
