I wanted to make an animal farm because I am tired of running around my map trying to find some animals when my character gets hungry. I built the farm, walls made of fences. I get about 10-20 of each animal in the farm and when I go mining they are all gone.. How do they leave then the only two people in my world are mining and the are closed in? I do have the top open so could that be it? I am not sure and could use the help. Thanks!
Hi, I can help you with your problem. First it really doesn't really matter about the roof gone or not. But it would look a bit nicer depending on how it looks like. But they shouldn't despawn anymore it says in the update. Well did you try breeding them first then leave them in the pen? If so that would help in the problem. If I'm wrong ( Which I shouldn't be ) try to ask a few other people on your friends list or even add my friend that is a total nerd on the game GT: a PuLsE yZ if he declines just send him a message about your problem and say that S0ysauce88 sent you here. Hope I tried to clear your problem! Cya later Dobezzy1328!

I am a angel, I shall disperse all demons from you.
I may be a angel, but that doesn't mean I have evil in me.
I'm not like any other angels, I posses all powers you can imagine.
When you dig the hole to keep them in make sure to make a double gate or they can climb up the way you go down in... I've had a bunch of sheep escape that way...
Or just don't put a gate at all and place blocks when you need their drops or meat.
What I do is have several small pens, usually 7x7 - 10x10, with one pen for each type of animal. I've had 2 despawn on me, but it didn't matter, since I bred them earlier. The babies never (so far) despawn.
put simply, make several small fenced areas, breed as soon as captured.
just build a pen thats 20x20 and they wont despawn. dont bother digging down 2 blocks and doing all this  people tell you to do. i made this thread a week ago and had a 4j dev tell me as long as they cant move more than 20 blocks in any direction they wont despawn.
since then ive had 20x20 pens full of pigs, cows, and sheep and they never despawn.

Just use a ladder instead of stairs. Place it one block above ground level of the pit.

That's what I do. 2 deep hole... surrounded by fences ( for double assurance ) and then fence gate to go in and out only accessible by ladder. Works perfect only lost one sheep once, could of been lightning or other variables. But yeah. Animals according to my testing despawn/clip out with fences But! when Holed in.. They stay put.

youre wrong. im extremely meticulous and OCD about this game and my animals do not despawn out of 20x20 pens. count again.
These are just flat out false statements. I dont care if GOD told you that. The 4J devs dont know whats wrong with the animals despawning, otherwise it would be fixed.

i am using 4 5x5 pens , inside a larger 15x15 pen, which allows 1 row in between each pen and the outside fence
all the fences and gates are stacked 2 high. i only keep 2 animals in each pen.
breed, kill one of the adults, repeat
maybe 1 every 50 visits one of the animals will be outside of their little pen and in the larger one.
not had any of poof after that last patch
Pen Size might improve it, but it isn't a be all solution.. About the only thing that matters is how often you are near your pen, spend too long away and they'll eventually despawn (for some people, some are luckier than others).
I have chicken coops, that are only 3x3, one held 5 chickens, the other had about 8. They were empty after I had spent a long time in the nether building a blaze grinder. So now I'm in the process of repopulating them, and reminding myself to peek in on them every so often.

This is what I'm doing... and I can verify that it works.
