So, I started a simple outpost in a plains area, and decided to turn it into a tower. I want to add some archers posts for sniping mobs at night, and was wondering if anyone has any guesses to what the ideal height would be to place the sniping posts?
I'm not really sure how realistic the arrow physics are.
I think view is more important than trajectory since the player can change the trajectory of the arrow by raising or lowering the bow. I would ask myself - What height gives the player the best, obstacle free view for both the farthest and nearest distance where mobs may be found?
Hah, wiki is usually my first stop for info, but for some reason I assumed it wouldn't have detailed info on arrow physics. Thanks.
The wiki says arrows can travel 120 blocks if fired from the optimal angle. I guess my original question still stands, does firing from an elevated surface effect how far of a target you can hit on the ground?
I would assume yes, since it has a greater distance to fall, and thus, travel?

Viewing mobs isnt a problem at all, since my tower is on a plains area. The question is whats the farthest mob i can hit, and does going higher increase the distance you can hit, or is going hige only putting more distance between me and the mob?

I think that at 120 blocks at optimal angle on the flat (45 degrees), you're going to run up against the draw distance of the game itself and the maximum distance mobs will spawn and not instantly despawn (128 blocks) fairly quickly.
Mobs freeze if you are 32+ blocks away from them, and also have a chance to despawn.
So I'd say that as long as you can see 32 blocks away, then you should be ok.
Also, Do you not want to collect the XP they drop? If so, you'd better being close. . . does XP diassapper?
I would jst go run around the field afterwards. Not really sure how long it takes xp to disappear. Its not super practical, its just fun to pick mobs off from a high place. Good for RP or if I ever find enough minecrafters to to run a siege scenarion. Also plan on eventually building a TNT cannon on top of the tower. Not really sure how much space that requires though, hopefully it will fit.
I've tried putting TNT cannons on top of towers before. They are difficult to aim and often explode in mid-air nowhere near the target due to traveling horizontally then dropping vertically. I'm not saying it's impossible but I gave up on it.

Yes, XP does disappear just like other drops.... after about 5 minutes.
