I'll post some later for my new survival world.. It's the most elaborate yet. I love it!
But yes Mainly my builds in survival are more functional than anything else.

Yes, In survival function > form...but its nice to come home to a pretty house after a night of creeper slaying. I have been building on a swamp, kinda of a raised cottage style compound.
I think it's because I'm not putting much effort into them, because I know that in a few weeks/months i'll be starting a new map once we get jungles. Maybe once all the terrain gen updates have been done, I'll start something decent.
Mine certainly do at least. Overtime I add to it when I need things; ie... Storage, Farm (of any kind), Mine (Whether digging or a Branch), Enchanting Room, Brewing Room, Bedroom, or even a Minecart rail system if I need to connect something to it.
Sometimes when I start I might have several places that I set up a shelter at first just to have a look around the world. It is those shelters that eventually I may connect via rail, and might expand upon as well.
As far as the look, most of it usually is underground as of recent, but usually I have a specific style of lighting that I use in combination with slabs and stairs on the floor. The Lighting is simply using pumpkins.
1. dig 2 1x3 sections in wall separated by 2 blocks.
2. Fill those 2 sections with wood logs.
3. dig out a 2x2x1 hole between those logs.
4. dig on the top of the 2x2 a 2x1 hole.
5. Put 2 pumpkin lanterns inside that 2x1 hole.
6. Dig out underneath those pumpkins making sure not to accidentally taking the pumpkins out.
7. Dig 2x1 between the wood posts below the 2x2 area so it is a 2x1 hole below the posts' bottom log.
8. Fill that 2x1 with stone brick.
9. Place 2 stairs directly on the pumpkin face to cover it.
10. Place 2 fences on the stone bricks below the stairs.
And that is it. That is my lighting style. There are variations to this like for example the 2x2 section could be set 1 block higher where the stone brick will show more. Also since I usually have a 3 high roof in mind I sometimes place slabs around the room to accent or just cover the floor with them to match the lighting alcove. It is one of the ways I hide my lighting with out hiding the light it gives.
Just imagine that all over the place down corridors, stairs, rooms, etc... Now sometimes I shorten the area between the logs by 1 to make it 1 between the logs, and others lengthen it to 3 or 4 depending on the situation. I have other variations but this post is long enough...lol
That pretty much sums what my bases/housing usually looks like..:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
My last survival home was this one: http://mcxphotos.com...winterhold-keep
Sadly I've lost it due to a weather shift. Having it rain instead of snow just wasn't the same. I've become a bit better of a builder since then. I'm working on a new castle in creative just for practice so that when we get jungles I can once again live in a survival castle.
I normally Start of with some type of small structure above ground and then build large additions underground. Since most of my time is underground I see it as a time saver.

That is a nice base but it looks as though some was created in creative mode?
I built mine on top of a small mountain with steep sides and then dug a hole to the bottom and made a cave so you have to climb a ladder to get to the house it's self. Working on digging out the mountain for storage though. <.<
Normally i just dig into the side of a mountain (if i'm playing by myself) but on my last survival game I actually found a nearly intact (98% intact, just about 8 blocks missing from one wall in a library (there's 2 of them) and another 8 from one hallway) stronghold that i've made my base, i've even lured down sheep, pigs, cows, and some chickens, and have a small sugar cane/wheat/pumpkin farm going in one room.
My first base was on an island.
A simple, two-story house with a library, kitchen, bedroom, playroom, and of course, some kind of demonic shrine on the roof, all under a massive stone platform.
Sadly, I lost this world.
Now I live at Y=10 in a home that has all farms (including trees) as well as a bedroom, enchantment room, and a cobblestone generator...oh, and a never-to-be-finished living room....
