So, after a few weeks of play and fairly thoroughly exploring the southeast quadrant of my map, I decided i needed some melon seeds. So I took my super-fastest diamond pick, and started travelling. Now after a while of searching for abandoned mineshafts and having no luck i finally decided to resort to the glowstone viewing trick. Still nothing... so, does anyone know, is there at least one abandoned mineshaft on a map? Its the only map I have been playing that I haven't found a stronghold yet either. Also, i did not put the villages option on when I started this seed. The seed is 15555535. The map was created pre-nether fortress update.
A map (at least on PC version) is infinite and it will generate new chunks (or re-load ones you have already been to) when you walk near them. So, yes, you can find at least one abandoned mineshaft on any Minecraft map; it just is a matter of chance.

If you turned generated structures off then you won't have any.
Is the same thing as what this person has said. Villages & mineshafts are structures. The Stronghold and fortress are the only ones you are guaranteed to have 1 in each world. Finding them is a different matter. Although with that option off I wonder if strongholds would even are connected to that option still...hmmm....

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
To the OP - as has been said - since you did not enable villages, you have no mineshafts either. HOWEVER, even when mineshafts are enabled they can still be terribly hard to find. This is because mineshafts only need a 5x5 space in which to propogate. thus, you can be mining right enxt to one and never see it. Even the xray glitch wont always reveal them because underground ravines block your view.
