So can you put one as a "guard" next to a spawner and allow the spawner to stay in "active mode" spewing out mobs even as you are more than 16 Blocks away??? Just wondered, didn't feel like doing the testing for it.

I believe spawners only activate when a player is within a 16 block radius.
Hm..... so let's say I find a spawner a good distance away, make sure it's totally in darkness and build a grinder w/snow golem lure, and set up a water delivery system for drops.... once I move 17 blocks away, nothing at all will happen there? Will I just be looking at an empty stream of water?
They don't do a whole lot but they do attract mobs like the player - that's my understanding anyway. If so, it's possible they would activate a spawner as well.

Precisely. If you have a line of sight to the spawner when you are within the 16 blocks, it will appear on fire. The fire will go out when you are outside the 16 blocks. The fire means it is active and will spawn mobs.
does the light level affect how often it spawns mobs? there's a cave right by my house with a dungeon just a few blocks inside. since it's sorta of lit up, will that reduce the number?

If the area next to the mob spawner is lit up with torches, glowstone, etc, fewer/no mobs will spawn. If you light up caves around it however, more mobs will spawn in the spawner because less spawn capacity is taken by random mobs in caves.

i see! maybe that's why i've only been getting a very few to spawn. been trying to use that for exp. gonna light up all the surronding caves/areas. thanks!

It does not. Only players activate mob spawners.
