I want to know what you guys do for the first night before it turns all dark and scary and stuff like that. Do you dig into a mountain, try to make a small house, make a wood sword and hope to survive? I want to know your process to surviving your first night?
P.S. This is my first post, and I am also new to minecraft.
First thing I do is collect some wood, then make a pickaxe to get some stone for stone tools. Then make an axe and chop down about 30 pieces of wood, then go caving. By the time I get out, it's already morning the next day, maybe a few days later. Caving always seems to be the answer to spending nights in Minecraft when you have no bed.
I normally grab some wood from punching trees and make a boat. I like to stay moving on the open waters the first few nights till I find a good spot to start a base camp. Then it's down to the mines to start digging up the good stuff!

The reason some people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.
I run around and hunt down as many sheep as I can, then I dig underground and make rat tunnels. That's when I play alone. When I play with friends, they all have different jobs; like "Jerry" can go ''lumberjacking'' and "Steven" can go looking for sheep, while I make the housing. Or we just look for a village and pillage it. :D.
I punch down some trees, make a wood pickax, get some cobble, make a crafting bench, make a furnace, make charcoal, make torches. (Unless I get lucky and find coal.) Then I dig a hole in some convenient hillside and wall myself in for the night with some torches in there to keep the baddies out. If I can get some sand, I make some glass so I can look out and see when the sun has risen.
I am a great coward on minecraft and I hate fighting monsters. Better safe than sorry.
Since I usually have bonus chest on, which supplies some basics, I usually look around the are for a spot to build. Of recent it has mainly been underground, so I mainly look for a lil hovel/hole to build up around and go from there. Whether it will be temporary or not is dependent upon the surroundings, else I move to the next lil spot.
I usually collect this and that to ensure I can survive underground or well get an underground base of sorts at least started. never can have too much wood. So sometimes it takes 2 days before I decide on a place that I want to work with. So roaming is what I mainly do on my first day...:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
Welcome to the forums!
I always make a crafting table first. What I do next depends on the difficulty. If I'm on peaceful, I tend to derp around and try to find a nice place to settle. If I'm playing anything above that, I start slaughtering animals immediately. I go for sheep first, then the meaty ones. No matter what I end up digging a hole in the ground for the first night, and tend to use it for some time afterward, just expanding a bit to include room for a chest or two.

The good people, they always die. And the bad people do too...But the weaker people, the people like me, WE have inherited the Earth. -Morgan Jones
Unless I know before what the world contains, I usually explore the entire map, collecting wood, stone, any ores sticking out, and food along the way.
By the time night has arrived, I have enough wool for a bed and just plop it down before monsters spawn.
In addition to what everybody else has said I'll put in my two words Tree house! Find a monster tree, throw a ladder up the side, and dig a hole in the branches. It makes a good temporary base and a good place to duck into when you're too far from your main base. Besides it's a great sniping platform for harvesting hostile mobs later.

Always remember the early bird catches the worm....
However the flipside of that is the early worm gets clobbered!

My priorities during the first day are: wood, crafting table, wood axe, pickaxe, stone and more wood, furnace & get some wood going for charcoal, stone pickaxe, stone weapon, wool & food, quick hunt for iron visible from surface if I have time, dirt hovel (either a hole in the side of a hill or a hole in the ground), If I found iron before nightfall, I'll smelt it and make iron sword and pickaxe, if I found sheep and got wool, I'll make a bed and shorten the night with it; if not, I'll start a staircase downward and start mining.
All i do is break down about 3 trees make sticks wooden pick and a crafting table get stone about 7 make a stone axe sword and pickaxe from the leftover wood hunt sheep on sunset make a bed throw up a 4X4 wood house around a tree stump lay down my bed partially underground and sleep. mobs got nothing on me!

First order of business: build a bed and get a few torches. You can build a "crab hole" (dig down, make a 4x4 area, drop the bed, put up a torch, plug up the hole) anywhere from then on in.
All depends on the map and what I have near by, with the way current animals spawn and the abundance of Iron ore, I usually have a bed constructed long before night time shows up, so I usually build a 4X6 hour and sleep through it. I've built a shelter in to the side of a mountain a couple times as well. The first day seems to be longer than most, I doubt thats the case, just feels like it, so I usually have plenty of time to get a shelter up to get through the first night.
To all of you saying to dig a shelter, with the animal spawns now you can usually make a bed fairly easily. Also, if you sleep right away, your bed doesn't need to be protected from monsters.
