I pulled nether wart out of the nether an planted some in the normal world an my nether wart isn't growing at all have missed something with this.
Please help out
It only grows on Soulsand in the Nether. You can step on it, walk all over it ect. as well. No water needed, and the rumor I heard was it needs fire instead of water, this is wrong. They just need light like any other plant to help speed up their growth.

As of now, it'll grow only in the Nether, though I seem to be the only bird person who got over a full stack in one trip and never needed to return....
Nether wart has 3 stages of growth. It can be hard to tell the difference between the last two stages though. If you harvest it before the last stage it lessens the drops you get from a plant.
The wiki also says it can be used to breed chickens just like seeds. I'll have to try that out.
