Do you have any? Post them here, I'm hoping more savvy players can comment on these failed experiments and perhaps offer a redeeming tweak.
In my armory, I got the bright idea of an autoarmorer. Three narrow passages with stone plate triggers, next to four dispensers. One for helmet, one for tunic, one for leggings and one for boots.
I could have sworn that, (at one time) when you pick up a piece of armor, and you aren't wearing a corresponding piece, you automatically equip it. So with this idea in mind, you can just run through this small hallway and emerge completely decked out for battle.
Well, it didn't exactly work.
First of all, it DIDN'T autoequip, The items just popped into my inventory. Second of all, how often do you replace your armor? It didn't really seem to warrant this kind of a deployment system. Finally, it was a pain in the butt to restock the things, and makes you wonder why you don't simply keep the armor and a chest and just equip it at leisure.

I actually had the same idea except you press one button, and 7 dispensers would give you the 4 armor pieces, a sword, a bow, and arrows. It was more for roleplaying than anything, and I knew that armor doesn't autoequip. It was just a guard house thing I did on one of my first builds. I went with the room and button idea so that you'd visit it on an "as needed" basis.
Yeah I have a wall with each piece of armor in a dispenser and it's really just a thing to do you know(Plus I have a ton of Iron)....
But auto equip would be sweet.. feel like Iron Man walking through there!

I made a system where a door opens upon minecart reaching a certain point, even got the pistons to move the track out of the way and then back in place....AND IT WORKED!!!
I re-created it in my new world, in a more "effecient" way...and it DOES NOT work!!
Noooooooo....
I have to go back to my sloppy design to make it work...have no idea why. You'd think less parts and simplification is better, but..uh..nope.

I feel your pain. I have spent many times practically yelling at the screen... "Oh COME ON, that worked before, WHY ISNT IT WORKING NOW?!"
I had a mob grinder. The idea was to be optimal height for one kill after fall.. Then since my knockback sword threw the mobs/drops everywhere. Idea was this...
Once a ton of drops sit there unreachable . Piston opens , revealing water source block. that would then be pushed up by another piston allowing pretty even flow of drops to all sides...
... Pistons can't push water.... :/
So I had to go with the classic release of water flow that uses too many resources/space.

I had the most super-awesome idea in tekkit to make a mob dropper tower that spawns mobs in the dark and then uses water to push them into a hole in the centre and drop them to their deaths. Underneath I had a floor of transposers to pick up the drops and send them back to my house via pipes. The idea was that I could be anywhere in my compound and mobs would continually fall, giving me a near infinite supply of bones, gunpowder, etc. And it worked.
The problem was that I didn't take into account that mobs only move when a player is within a certain distance of them, around 32 blocks or something like that. So the only way it worked was if I was standing pretty much directly underneath the dropper; when I was anywhere else in the compound doing stuff the mobs still spawned, but just stood in the dark and never fell down.
I spent 2 days making that thing and it was next to useless.
edit: oops, didn't see this was in the 360 section, but never mind I guess, it's still a good story
You can use Snow Golems now to lure the non-Creeper mobs.
My friends and I had a bright idea to go all the way down to bedrock and dig an upside down pyramid shape, five blocks deep and expanding by five blocks in all directions until it hit the surface. We gave up on that fairly quick when it became apparent just how much block that would require moving- about a 120x120x5 area by the time it got to the top >_<
but i love these type of failed experiments, thats how we learn and improve
one that stuck in my mind was my huge cobblestone generator i built, took me hrs of playing with it, refining it, got it working to perfection, storing 1000's of blocks,
but the problem is i always go to my mines to get my cobblestone lol
but i enjoyed building it and was a sense of achievement
Haha, yup I've done that one. My favorite "fail" is spending a week and tons of resources building a huge underground farm. Melons, pumpkins, wheat, and sugar cane. Each type of item was hooked up to a bud switch system to auto harvest it, then I could run into the room whenever I was around and grab a bunch stuff laying around. Of course I forgot about the item sprite limit, which hurt its production, but then after a few days of grabbing stuff I had sooo much that I never needed it again. At least it looked cool.

I also had an issue with a cobblestone generator, but not the fact that I didn't use it. I built a ridiculously large auto-storage machine (holds 8,231 cobblestone blocks) and didn't realize that piston lag would eventually break the device... literally, physically break the machine. Once it reached the point of about 180+ pistons firing in unison, the block detecting pistons would just freeze and simply not extend. Upon the next cycle, a block would be pushed adjacent to the piston, breaking a tile of redstone dust, then prior detectors would be broken once the 12-block limit was reached.
I have a problem with spirals. Whenever I decide to go mining, I can't bring myself to create a straight-line stair case. I always end up feeling like I need to turn it. Then when I get tired of jumping/running up and down stairs, It becomes a spiral cart track. I've done it on several worlds now, and I can't seem to stop the compulsion. Recently, I built a spiral-stair-case-turned-cart-track down to bedrock. Horribly inefficient use of powered rails, and I get dizzy every time I use it.
Brilliant idea to build a mob grinder - above my house. Just a little annoying... I ended up moving to a new house instead of breaking down the grinder!

on one of my old worlds, i wanted a passive mob farm. i built it just like my hostal mob farm but made the floors out of dirt and turned it to grass. took me 4-5 days of building, mineing, and getting the grass to grow up there. after about 2-3 days of it being completed it never worked. i forgot that in front of my house there was a huge completely flat field that never ran out of passive mobs. they all spawned down there instead of the grinder working. so mad at myself for not thinking. thing looked horrible too.
In one of my worlds I tried creating Sauron's eye from the Lord of the Rings movies and several times when I tried putting lava inside the glass I missed something so the lava ended up pouring off the sides... and it was right by my house. Let's just say the average temp in my house was probably 100o

This is one of those very weird intangibles that is hard to describe to non-MC players.
It may not be practical.... I may not USE it again... but dammit, I BUILT it, and it WORKS. If I need to, I can make one again.

Curse PremiumIn 1.5, armor shot from dispensers will auto-equip if you have an open spot..
Anyone get it to work?

It caused decent server lag...and the light contrast was blinding during the day....

Turns out, this isn't really practical to do in the limited confines of a castle chamber. Using an empty cave is far, far more useful.
