One thing that's kind of cool about the Xbox game lagging behind the computer version is that we see what's to come... what features are going to come down the pike in the next couple of months.
However, something I have noticed is that boats continue to be neglected. All we have is essentially a barrel lid to ride around the oceans on.
What I would love to see is the ability to build ships... anything from a small sloop all the way up to a massive galleon.
I realize of course, there's a few issues at hand.
First of all, this will turn the water building mechanic on its head. We'd have to assign bouyancy attributes to blocks, which would be the end of placing superficial stone blocks over water (without building a base).
Second of all, I suppose there's a practicality issue. There's all kinds of cool features and possibilities for building minecart rails.... but then, there's a fundamental purpose for doing that: using a rail system helps with mine transportation and goods moving. Even at best, the ships travel speed won't be great, and there's really nowhere you can't get just by swimming.
I suppose it's dumb to play devils advocate on my own ideas here, but I really would love to see large ships in this game. We could even have ship battles on PvP servers.... firing TNT cannons, while players duke it out with arrows while trying to repair the ship damage. Shipwrecks could even be added underwater.
Well I have been saying for a while we should have some kind of ships and cannons. Not sure if its even possible though.
I think it would be straightforward to make a cannon object, which works like a dispenser with greater range for game purposes. And when it fires, the cannonball it projects has a detonation timer much like a provoked Creeper (we could even keep the sizzling noise). Simply load the cannon dispenser object with a cannonball (4x Iron Ingots) and a TNT pack, and then hit with a flint.
But again, the water issue would be a BIG problem. It would redefine how blocks behave in water, and I'm not sure if that is possible or if the Minecraft devotees would be cool with such a radical world change.
I agree with you, I always wanted better ships/boats in the game, the current one is just a piece of plank...
Actually I prefer to swim instead of wasting resources building that.

And again, I must admit this is the biggest flaw with the concept. If you could get fatigued while swimming, there might be a reason, but frankly there's absolutely no reason you can't just swim somewhere.

Swimming is better because:
1. The boat is slow.
2. Swimming is easy.
3. The boat is hard to turn, it get's even worse when playing online.
4. It breaks if you touch any block.

I said the boat is slow, I didn't say the boat is slower than swimming
Swimming is a lot more convenient - You can cross any ocean/river easily. When using a boat, you must be careful cause they break if you hit any block, and upon breaking they give out different materials then the ones you used to craft it. And they are hard to turn.
That's why, and let's reinforce the topic's subject again, we need a new boat/ship, for sure.
More resistant, good-looking and maybe something where you could bring your friends over to a boat trip? That would be fun. I'd even take my time to build larger ocean canals across my map.
you know the boat does not break when it hits lilly pads right? You could line a dock with them and have a comfort zone with them and have boat not break. The only reason I know boat does not break on lillies is because of the tutorial world. I traveled around the map on boat, and that was one obstacle that was somewhat annoying a best, but the boat didn't break. Actually compared to what it was like in 1.7.3 the boats are a bit more resilient than before. Not so flimsy, but still break on high speed contact with hard surface...
Wily Coyote comes to mine with rocket skates... Wall... Flat.... slide off slowly...lol I am not sure if I should feel bad for him or road runner...lol always being chased down by a crazy coyote...:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

Yep. But my world is an old one, there are no lilipads :/
Overall speed Is what you want when crossing a ocean, Etc...
The form of water In MC are usually the same, Which Is a great body of water.
And I think the conversations about the speed, controls, etc Of a boat all fit in this category.
I don't think we need ships. Although Minecraft is based in a medieval age (I'm guessing?) I think ships would be a bit much. What we do need is to just have boats fixed. At the moment they have the turning circle of the titanic and the fragility of a leaf, which is bloody annoying. Boats actually handle better on Xbox than PC last time I checked, on PC you have to point the mouse where you want to go at the same time as nursing the directional key, which doesn't always work right.
Or maybe, they could split the current boat into two or more different boats;
For example, a sailboat: faster and easy to turn, but as fragile as our current boat. And a cargo boat: Not huge, but something a bit bigger and of course slower, and not fragile at all, where you can transport stuff.

One possiblility for this to work is to have block physics similar to forge mode phased piece properties on Halo Reach and Halo 4. Basically give wooden planks/blocks a property box...
All attached floating wood blocks would move together. Floating wood blocks could be placed next to a solid piece, but would immediately start floating away.
The problem with this is that it would most likely lead to reduced world sizes or at the very least, increase the map file sizes. Adding specific properties to blocks times the number of blocks in the world = more data for each world to store.
They could create different boats that are created in the same way as golems. Build the correct pattern of blocks and they "turn into" a boat. This would minimize memory issues by making the boat a single object instead of a bunch of blocks.

This is a good idea. It does take away the customizing factor. I just love the idea of building a six deck galleon and skippering it around. I mean, I can do it now but it wont GO anywhere. It's just a building on the water in the shape of a boat.
But then, I also remember what someone said to me when I suggested some maritime changes in Ultima Online (really dating myself here)... "Look, if you really want to play Blackbeard, I'd suggest you load up a different game more conducive for that kind of gameplay."

Actually, swimming makes your hunger drop really, really fast. So you do get fatigued while swimming in a way.

Retired StaffYeah. Boats with chests would be a cheaper solution to transport your items, since rails cost a lot of iron (and gold, for the powered rail).
