I've seen them form in underwater waterfalls... a lake that has a cavern under it. It was a nice, convenient way of killing them and getting the ink sac.
squids are found in a way, in all water that is big enough spread for them. Well for all I know. But might be that they have to be in ocean biome to spawn or river... unsure of that actually. The wiki would be more accurate than me, like the person above mentioned.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
The wiki says: " They can be found in water of any depth, in any biome, and spawn on any difficulty."
But there's no indication as if they spawn in areas above sea level. Perhaps no?
Try to farm squids in existing oceans or rivers, the wiki itself has a link to a Squid Farm. It's for PC version, but it may work in our version...

How do we get squids to spawn in "artificial" environments?
