i used to be that way; but with all the huge, huge caves I've been finding lately, I'm finding that I'm not coming back from mining with very much cobblestone at all. Now, I use the cobblestone I generate to build safer stairways in these caves as well as for doing bigger stone builds. It's actually come in handier than I originally thought it would.
*shrugs* I suppose one of the most wondrous things about games is that everyone's experience will vary.
Indeed: if you are hurting for diamonds, I guarantee you will be having cobblestone coming out of your ears.

I recommend a smooth stone generator, same results, but faster to mine, and you don't have to cook cobble if you silk touch it. Hardest part is getting the timing on the piston right. A bit of trial and error will get you through that.
I decided a "useless" cobble stone generator was too simple for my world, so I decided I needed a 3x3 cobble cube that would rise "magically" from the ground. The thing takes up an entire island, since my redstone was sloppy. It's pretty awesome though, and I learned some new redstone tricks for my next project. I'll build another someday that will be 1/10 the size, as still as "useless" as ever. Sure, I could mine, but my version involves sunshine and smiling. Something that just doesn't happen when I'm digging around.

how do you even find that much redstone. do you use creative mode. or at least i assume ur using alot of redstone since u said thats ur generator thing fills up an island

not to bump in on someone elses thread, but how many types of generators are there? I dont mean design-wise, but what they produce. An obsidian generator is probably asking for too much, eh?

there is an Obsidian generator, ive seen a few of my friends build them, i never tried them, dont even know if they still work thb
you had the sand and gravel generators, dont think they work either now
i made an ice block generator, used that to build my ice house before creative came out
is it possible to mine ice. and how do u make an ice block generator

a piston face up with water above it, a bud switch to the side of the water source, when the water turns to ice it activates the buds switch and the piston below ejects the ice block, just make sure the water source has one either side so it generates a new water source block above the piston

Would anyone be willing to tell/link me to how to make an obsidian generator? Getting obsidian quickly is my biggest concern for starting my next survival game. Thanks!

I am.......not sure. I'm using my tablet, and the touchscreen has been less than accurate lately. I'm going to blame it on that.
Yeah, they still work, just finished building one yesterday.
