So I was clearing away space for a lab in the sublevel of my castle, and then it starts.
"Mooooannnn...."
"Mooooannn...."

Sounds very close. Well, looks like there is a zombie somewhere in the stonework. The sounds of the rotter makes me think it's close, due to the volume. Then I start hearing ratting and bowstrings snapping. Oh goody, looks like there's a generator nearby.
So I start mining in all directions, focusing towards the sound.
Well, I've about cleared out the astrodome down there... and STILL CANT FIND THEM. Worse, I hear the "they are 3 feet away" noises, which puts me on edge.
Does anyone have tips for these situations? Using the sound as a zero-in device doesn't seem to work very well.
If they can't get at me, I just leave 'em in the walls and turn my game volume waaaay down. It does, however, make it easier for the creepers to sneak up on me (ref: your other thread) - lol.

creepers are silent anyway...O_o
OP I just ignore them unless they interrupt my sleep, in that case I just look for another place to put my bed if I can not find the so called noise maker. I hear the sounds all the time but I know for fact they can't get me. Makes me wonder if they confused ambiance with the sounds of the monsters sometimes. >< either way I am sure something might be done about it. The sounds I am hearing mostly are due to above ground mainly. I mean I am like 40+ blocks down in the earth branch mining. At least the water and lava sounds I can home in on are correct. Well more so than any mob sound.
This probably will be fixed once they figure on making the music box actually usable, as of now it is only if you are facing the stupid thing... hardly based on distance and to me makes it useless...><

Yes, they are silent.... until the SSSSSS starts; but with the volume down I don't even hear that. The first clue I get is the "You Died" screen... or if I'm wearing armor, sometimes whatever I'm working on just sort of disintegrates around me and I'm left standing there a little confused for a second or two. Also, since nothing else makes noise with the volume turned down, I have a bigger tendency to just get completely absorbed in whatever I'm building or mining.

usually when i would hear sizzle from behind it is too late anyway... for me...>< One reason I always check my back when going out of safety and paranoid one will just show up.. in a manner of speaking of course... it is the one thing I always look out for whether I can hear them or not...lol

Best way to find things like this is put a sticky piston 4 blocks high in a corner, then put tnt under the sticky piston and to power it put a leaver next to the piston,Not the TNT. Hit the leaver while under the TNT and the piston will push the TNT through your head giving you X-ray vision! You will now be able to see through the walls you are next to finding the spot you cant find. Then profit.

A figure of speech. But there's a volume of the monster's noises that I've learned means they are very, VERY close.
oh yes i actually used there noise to find a mob sapawner about less than an hour ago. sadly i had no food and if i went in there i would have died far away from my home so i had to leave it there still unlit. i always use zombies noise to find them im getting reall god at it. but if you go insane with thoe noise i say blow it all up and there you go

Mob sound distance is supposed to only be 16 blocks. If the OP really has completely cleared the astrodome or the equivalent thereof, then it could very well be a sound glitch.
Now, sixteen block is quite a ways off, but still.
Just Leave it and turn your volume down, It might be wanting to move into your place and be in the walls because you wont let him live there... racist against zombies are you? jk But just leave him if he cant get at you.
It always seems to be spiders that do this to me, but yeah, your title is quite appropriate for these situations. I try to ignore them, but after awhile, it's makes me so mad I get the "twitch" and I have to go digging for the source like a lunatic.
