It seems like the worlds are really hollow since 1.8.2 came out. I can't dig anywhere without finding massive cave systems.
I agree in spades, Bear! I used to come back from mining with a ton of cobblestone... now, I find myself using my cobblestone generator to stock up on cobblestone before I leave so that I have something to make steps with.
As folks are saying, caves. Caves and crevasses are excellent because they let you scan huge swaths for elements without having to even raise your pick. Just drop torches and have a look around for iron blocks.
Otherwise, you're just going to have to slog away and mine. Eventually you'll find some.

I am actually surprised in the couple of worlds I generated that I didn't find massive cave systems while I was digging so far...O_o
But best way to find iron is to either:
1. Do a big project that involves you digging a lot out underground.
2. Caving at and under the y60 level.
3. Ravines same as above.
4. Branch mining below the surface.
5. Build an underground base or live underground.
I think its proven that caves are the best way to go, NOW!
Back to FMA! I never got a chance to watch the show. The story never really did grab me. I hear alot of people say it was good.
Really, If you find a cave entrance in 1.4.7, you can usually explore that one cave almost endlessly. The cave generator is WAY to common for my taste, but it makes ores very easy to find.
