Really, If you find a cave entrance in 1.4.7, you can usually explore that one cave almost endlessly. The cave generator is WAY to common for my taste, but it makes ores very easy to find.

But on the Xbox caves are not that big... Yes there are ravines, but a limited amount of them per map.
As others have said, searching in caves is probably your best bet. However, iron is only found below sea level, so caves high up in mountains won't yield iron until you work your way below the sea level layer. Another tip is to place torches frequently when you're making your way into a cave and then look around you (up, down, behind, etc.). Iron ore, in particular, is very easy to miss in the dark.
ETA: My friend, who is color blind, has a VERY difficult time spotting iron ore.
You can easily find caves inside moutains, and caves are the perfect place to mine for iron ores. But if you are searching for better ores such as gold and diamond, then you should check on layers below sea level.

To clarify - Yes, you can find lots of great cave entrances in the mountains, but you won't start encountering iron ore until you descend inside that cave so that you are actually below the sea level of the game. Coal is the only ore found above sea level (which is about layer 64 on most maps). Ref: Wiki - Iron Ore is found only in layer 5 to 64, coal may be found in layers 5 to 128).
Yeah I see what you mean. But since most caves will not spawn in areas above sea level (only small caves, if the moutain is really big), that's why I said it's a lot easier to find iron in caves, specially in ravines

I find a lot of caves with entrances above sea level. Some of them might appear to go nowhere, but it's usually just a matter of looking around a little and you'll spot a single-block hole in the floor or a wall that opens up into another section of the cave that works its way farther down. Failing that, there is often gravel piled up at the end. If you dig through this gravel, there is a strong chance that it will open up into another section of the cave. I find that most caves at surface do connect to other caves and/or ravines that eventually lead down to lava somewhere.
I think its proven that caves are the best way to go, NOW!
Back to FMA! I never got a chance to watch the show. The story never really did grab me. I hear alot of people say it was good.

Retired StaffThat's the easiest way to find iron, since it's a 'common' ore you can find it in almost all layers, while diamond and gold ores are a lot harder.
In short: Save the game, dig down until you reach a cave. Fell into a lava pool? Exit without saving and reload game.
BTW The Mustache Guy, have you changed your avatar? I miss the old Joker one xD

Retired StaffHow not? It's from a popular show, most people around know about it. And your tip is quite valuable, moutains always have caves inside them.
Which is my cue to sit here being completely clueless, but that's for a different topic. ._.
Stay fluffy~

It's the butter that eludes me. Seems like all the dairy farmers have gone on strike!
