Ok, this is another thing I was thinking about last night. (See my 'Food' thread)
When mining, we come across many types of ores: Iron, Gold, Diamond, Coal, Redstone, Lapis
ALL of the ores drop something. Diamond ore drops diamond, Lapis ore drops Lapis, Redstone ore drops redstone dust, but Iron and Gold just drop the ores.
I was thinking that it'd make sense if the Iron and Gold ores would drop Iron ingots and Gold ingots.
Having the ingots, you'd need to smelt them in order to get the Iron or Gold bars. This would make it so that the smelting process still had to be used.
Or, the other ores need to be smelted in order to get thier items. I guess it'd make it more unified.
I know that thier will be a lot of people whom disagree with me, but, tough, my opinion. Lol
I don't think it's something worth changing. The little bits of differences and randomness of some things are what make the game a little more challenging. I'm not in Notch's head, so I don't know for sure, but I think part of the philosophy behind the game is that nothing works 100% and little frustrations get in our way all the time... so a Fortune enchant probably shouldn't work on every ore, so a couple of ores drop a full block instead of an item. It's just part of the game.
If everything was uniform and the same, it would be all boring and too perfect of a world to even touch.... I actually prefer the small differences and little random things in the game, like up said above me.:D

I do agree with you both, it's just one of them things which has always bugged me. It's like gold and iron were neglected, in a way. Kinda.
(Slightly off topic: Has gold ore dwindled off slightly? Can't seem to find more than a stack in 20+ chunks)

I don't know whether it's been reduced in frequency or not, but I'm not finding quite as much of it either. However, I think diamonds are much tougher to find these days in some worlds. Some of the issue in some worlds, I think, is just the vast amounts of lava I'm encountering at those levels. Anyone want to buy some obsidian off me? (lol)
It is the same, after all it depends on what seed you are in to some degree. Some you will find more gold and some more diamonds..etc...
What I just noticed is that I am not seeing any iron bare to the land above ground level. Usually I see it all over the place like that, but no just coal. You would think extreme hills would have lots of iron, but I mostly find coal. >< I know coal is more common than iron, but in a way I miss the exposed iron I use to see on the side of a wall above ground level, y60.
Actually I like the fact that you have to smelt gold and iron though. Those are the only two that even make sense to smelt, all the rest are either a gem or similar use for fire. Of course redstone and lapis are well... magical in a sense...lol
I don't think they are being neglected, it is like saying gravel is being neglected because there isn't enough of it.... That is just sooooo wrong, as gravel is everywhere....>< and in some instances I have to say it is more common than dirt itself...O_o which is disturbing.

Nah... I'll buy the lava though, I have a lava storage to fill...lol
The amount of underground lava is aannoying at times. Especially when you try making a nice looking mine, and you tunnel into it!
Regarding the surface Iron. I think the recent updates have taken this 'benefit' away. I also don't see it as much either. Same as gold and diamond underground. I remember the seed worstseedever. That one was full of surface iron, diamonds and gold at the spawn. No more though
I suppose you're right Tam' , not neglected. I just think there should either be more ores, or more to do with the current 'ores',

im not sure if they will or not but there are soem ores i read about one was added on portable (Nether Quartz) used for like sun detectors that MAY stay a Portable exclusive tho

This may only be me but the gold frequency for me stayed the same (even on the new world) but in a diffrent location usually in the corners of maps near lava or under it...... but again this might just be my world try looking in corners though.
{this is a little off topic but if your mining and theres 'rocks' falling off the ceiling of your mine do NOT dig up --->

After 1.8 on the PC, all ores were reduced in frequency, especially diamonds.
I'm pretty sure that 4J brought this change over as well.

hmm... if that is true then they nerfed a lot of things, including armor weapons and such... all for enchantments...O_o
This would explain why I am not finding surface iron above y60 in certain places like I did before 1.8.2... It is almost like they increased the coal you find though...>< as that is the bulk of what I find... oh well when iron golems come in, then at least I could attempt a farm and hopefully have a steady supply... If they come in...lol

Well I wasn't saying when they nerfed them, I was just using a comparison for the most part...lol
And yeah the weapons and armor were nerfed when enchnating came out.
When the level of iron disappeared above y60, leaving more coal, was sometime round 1.8.2... Whether that is true or not I really don't know. Just have not built a world where I have found iron above that for some reason...O_o
Why would they do such a thing anyhow is beyond me. It was limited enough as is...>< at least what I found. Granted I still find a lot since it is pretty common, but still not as much like you are saying. I have found more in my 1.7.3 world than any other world. Gold however I don't see much a difference as I haven't playing in the recent ones long enough to know really. To me at least the amount I've been finding has been roughly bout' the same. If it has been nerfed to some degree, then it is possible it is due to the eventual pigman droping fragments. Well now they do and seems to play out that way.
After all they for the most part have most what they need to translate into the game up to that certain point, so it is safe to say for certain things they look at the long view of things to do before it happens for certain things. Whether good or not I am unsure. hmm...

There is actually hundreds of thousands of pieces of ore in each world. It's just the way it's spaced and dispersed that makes it seem like there isn't much,.
If it was reduced, numbers would be a little lower than this. But pre 1.8.2, these numbers are fairly accurate...

I just think it works this way with Gold and Iron for practical reasons.
Let's say gold ore blocks dropped gold nuggets, and iron ore blocks dropped ore chunks, which would make "more sense". It then makes sense to have to smelt those items to make ingots. (note to Ragnarock: an ingot IS a metal bar!)
You would then need to change the furnace interface so that x nuggets need to be melted before a gold ingot appears.
I'm willing to be Mojang considered such a thing and dismissed it, because: A) it's bothersome to implement and it is either NOT MORE fun than the current system, or even actively LESS fun, because your inventory would fill up with ore chunks and its fiddly and ultimately unnecessary.
It's annoying enough with Lapis, and lapis is super-rare compared to iron and gold!
Actually lapis gives you a whole lot per block even with out fortune...O_o Which I guess makes up for how many in a bunch you seem to find...
Z.Pigman drop nuggets...O_o and that would end up being a crafting and smelting recipe...O_o Still don't like the idea.....
Lapis Lazuli IN REAL LIFE is used as a dye, and when mined is broken down to little shreds of paper like dye. That's why it's the way it is.
Diamond when mined is tiny little pieces of rock, so that's why what it is.
Redstone, isn't real.
Gold and Iron are mined as an ore, then they must be melted down and shaped. In this case, the common ingot.

Religion, has actually convinced people, that there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of the day, and the invisible man has a special list. Of 10 things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do ANY of these ten things he has a special place, full of fire, and smoke, and burning, and torture, and will send you there to suffer and choke and scream for all of eternity... But he still loves you.
What I meant was exactly what you say, and it fills up your inventory and is annoying when you're underground, low on space, and might now have crafting table to turn 9 lapis into blocks to condense it. If gold and iron worked the same way as lapis it would be a complete pain in the neck I think. You mine a gold ore block, it sheds a pile of nuggets, then your inventory fills up until you can get to a smelter - or you have to carry one with you. Basically, the hereby system is better and more fun / less annoying.
Using a silk touch pickaxe can help solve the inventory issue with the ores that drop multiples of items. You can then use a fortune pickaxe on them when you get home. It does mean, however, mining them twice if you want to use the drops. However, the silk touch pickaxe also works on coal and redstone, unlike the crafting table solution since we don't currently have redstone blocks and I don't think even the PC has coal blocks.

Would have been pointless to nerf them without enchanting.

Diamond - 16,000
Coal - 600,000
Iron - 300,000
Gold - 60,000
So even if those numbers fell a little bit, that is still an insane amount of resources per world. http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1217287-the-map-limit-and-maths-what-you-should-know/
True enough... Even when I branch mine I don't usually get a whole lot, but it is enough for what I look for...
