Has anyone found them? I read that they're only in abandoned mineshafts. Are the seeds and abandoned mine shafts included in every seed? Thanks in advance for replies.
Abandoned Mine Shafts are present in every world. It isn't guaranteed that you'll find Melon Seeds in a chest though. Loot in chests is random, so there is always a small chance you might not ever find them. To date though, I've never had a world where I couldn't find Melon Seeds.
If you create a new world, you'll certainly find melon seeds, because in the strongholds there are many chests in every world and your chances of finding those seeds are really high.

Which brings in my law: The higher the probability, the less likely you'll find.
Evilwillhunting's Minecraft Law: The more time you sink into developing your world, the more likely you are to discover your world seed didn't include a vital resource.
no... unfortunately not, unless they just added something like that. The dungeon chests have what they usually have since they were put in... Well far as I know. Have not stumbled upon one that proved otherwise. --_--

With all the food alternatives in the game... can it really be said that melon seeds are a "vital resource?" With brewing, you'd have to do without a couple of different potions; but that's it.
OP: I've been finding multiple Mineshafts and melon seeds in almost every Mineshaft and certainly melon seeds in every world I've generated since Mineshafts were introduced into the game.

Nothing's actually vital, since you could pop in on Creative Mode any time you like and give yourself the missing element anyway.
I supposed "key" would work better than "vital here."

Uhm - to the best of my knowledge, on MCXBLA each world only ever has one stronghold, and the number of strongholds a world has wouldn't matter anyway because melon seeds (as others on this very thread have mentioned) are found in the chests accompanying cave spider spawners in abandoned mineshafts........

even if there is only 1 stronghold per world, still in some I find a lot of chests, and others very few... So it is up to chance on that one.. I do agree with mineshafts though, as all the mineshafts I have gone into that was able to find a chest at least one of them had melon seeds in them.

I restarted a seed after the lastest update, no melon seeds so far. Its the only thing I haven't found yet - ever. Its the one thing I want and really the only reason I can see for bothering with brewing (healing potions). Oh well - at least the new seed has netherwart and blazes. I don't want to go into creative mode, I don't think I should have to get something. I don't think this is a vital item, as mentioned above, but certainly annoying.

I know the feeling of that realization all too well
I found melon and pumpkin seeds in an abandoned mine shaft relatively close to spawn point. Here's the world seed and the coordinates to one of the cave opening leading to the mine shaft. I have not fully explored this cave system or mine shaft yet.

Cave Opening Coords: X = 231 , Y = 63 , Z = 156
I've been hollowing out a mountain base, and recently found the melons. I am going to be adding my melon farm today most likely.
Is it just me that thinks melons are a good food source? They're not "vital" but they are useful for food y'know as oppose to brewing.
I don't really think they're a "good" source of food given that I haven't found them; however, if found, they could be another source of food. Wheat, cows and pigs cover that. In my current seed I have a cow pen and wheat farm that provides more food than I really need. My wheat farm alone produces a stack of bread every harvest. Having looked over the forums and what-have-you it seems they'd be more useful for potions (healing potion). It would speed up my blaze farming not having to wait for my health to regenerate.

They can, rarely, appear in chests in the Stronghold, except the ones in the stronghold library. I found melon seeds in one of mine, but only once.
