Hi There!
Well I want to know whats your secret
how do you come up with your ideas to make Awsome builds?
I can make pixal arts life size builds anything except Houses
pictures of other houses helps. same goes for buildings, but usually I just build with the terrain. where houses are concerned that is a work in progress even for me, although I just try to make each like it belongs there or close to it. recently though all I ever build is underground now, so I know that is not much help...><
Another thing I look at is functionality... and purpose.

As my fellow builder Tamorr has stated, I would agree on these things. I find a lot of inspiration from big named people of Youtube and Planetminecraft. Plus don't be hesitant to try tutorials. Sure you are following someone's work, but you can always modify and tweak it yourself. Underground is a great place to start for you don't have to worry about the outside looks. You can even have the lair/house/whatever as big as ya want.
And finally functionality is a must for good looks. Like a potion lab/chem lab, library with roller ladders (well looks anyway..), and even bathrooms. Many great creations on how to make a good looking toilet and shower.

If you're playing survival, the first thing I do is grab all my supplies... then start digging into a hill. Make sure that you grab wood and sand. Once you dig into a hill, you'll get enough cobblestone to start furnacing other stuff. Generally, I build a door and some windows so I can look outside before I venture out... and slowly make my way through the hill. I build rooms as I go along. That way I can always fall back to a closed door if I fail to light my cavern up sufficiently. I slowly expand the rooms and build upwards until the hill is essentially gone.
I also make sure that I build an overhang above the first floor of my home... or any building I make. That way spiders can't climb up on the roof and drop down on me later on... unless they spawned up there in the first place. I often also make my outside walls at least 2-3 blocks thick. That way I can hit mobs outside my windows. With windows, make sure there is not 2 blocks open vertically or horizontally. Mobs can fit into windows two blocks high, while spiders can fit through open windows two blocks wide.
It's all trial and error... and as you keep progressing, you eventually start upgrading the blocks to better looking materials.
I find landscape in my world that I think looks nice. Then I kind of just stare at it until something comes to me. It usually happens pretty fast too.
Like my TU7 world. Found a mountain with a small little raise of land sticking up next to it. Instantly decided a base was going on the top of the mountain and a bridge to a tower on the smaller piece of land raising next to it.
