I'm gutted. My Xbox live gold membership ran out yesterday. I pay monthly and have no money in my account for a few weeks, so can't renew it yet. Which means I can't update!

Yes you will. Gold just grants you permission for online play, the use of apps, and the ability to utilize party chat. You can still download anything you want with a silver account.
My daughter was asking to go on MC for a while, so I thought "hey, it can't do any harm. My XBL membership has been suspended, so no one can join a game with her". . . . BUT, as I started MC up, it said that there was an update for the game.
Nothing strange about that you say?
Well. My xbox wasn't connected to Xbox Live. My membership had been suspended. The Xbox Dashboard said 'Connect to Xbox live'.
I didn't realise that your xbox will connect to the internet, WITHOUT being connected to xbox live.
