Is it true that animals despawn? I've only had this happen to me once but only with a small pack of animals. And if they do despawn how come 4J hasn't included this in the bug fix?
Yeah they despawn if you leave them in areas with more than 20x20 blocks of distance, and do not trust fences cause they are not enough to prevent animals from escaping...

I've never actually seen my animals escape. They've just vanished, been shot at by skeletons, but I've never seen one jump out (as much as they try to)
