1. Walk around your world while holding wheat seeds in your hand. This may draw some chickens hiding near you into the open as they will follow you. They like to hide in tall grass and under trees.
2. Try looking in caves where the animals can't get out due to a lack of stairs (i.e. the entrance is blocked because it requires a "jump" of a two-block high ledge.) Chickens fall into deep caves, but don't take fall damage because they flap their wings, so they are sometimes found deep underground.
3. Try killing off several of the other animals you find. This may encourage chickens to spawn in their place.

i seem to be having trouble finding chickens, should i be looking somewhere specific?
