I'm not too good with the redstone systems and junk. I was thinking though of making a dungeon where say it is a super flat world and there was a long dungeon made of cobblestone with a 1 way entrance. All players go inside the cave where there's like, 1 iron pick axe for everyone.
Once all the players go in the dungeon, they hit a pressure pad which activates a redstone mechanism and that redstone machanism ends up at a pushy thing which pushes the roof's cobblestone and there's a lava pool on the roof so lava begins flooding in.
The players have 1 life and have to mine (along the way are diamond blocks, wooden blocks, coal) away from the lava but there's like a pressure plate that lets the lava in every 20 blocks so you have to race and craft tools to escape as you're being pursued. In the way it gets harder because you have to start mining obsidian and wooden fences which take time to break unless you make an axe and spider webs.
Would this be able to be made? If so, it'd be pretty bangin' to play through.
I like the idea, it puts me in mind of some of the games the RvB guys play in their Let's Play Minecraft series.
You'd want the lava to be spaced every 8 blocks (lava flows 4 blocks after a drop) so that the players can't hide/get stuck between the flows.
You could set up a redstone delay circuit that triggers the next delay circuit down, wouldn't actually be that complicated.
I'd suggest building the main trench with bedrock to avoid accidental block breakage.
You'd need to set some ground rules which are followed like an honour system, e.g. no putting blocks in the roof to block the lava or putting a block over the lava source block, etc.

Have a play around and see what you come up with!
