What's better than that, though, is a pick with LOOTING. Then, you get a lot more of most resources, excluding anything that becomes is an ore BLOCK when mined.
You can't get looting on a pick only on a sword. Fortune gives you more ores except iron and gold.
Figured this out on my own. I wouldnt re-load with iron tools of course. Just take whatever I get. Getting exp is still time consuming, and sinking thirty exp into a diamond tool warrants re-loading until you get what you need. I've noticed tools degrade faster now, or maybe its because I play on hard mode, but my diamond picks don't last as long as they used to even with unbreaking 3
I've completed an intentional experiment on both stone and iron pickaxes enchanted with Unbreaking at all three levels. Unbreaking I doubles the life of the pickaxe, Unbreaking II triples it, and Unbreaking III gives it 3.5 times more life. I haven't specifically tested diamond pickaxes, but I have one in one of my worlds that is enchanted with Unbreaking III and I have used it extensively to eliminate a lava lake. I have mined approximately 750 blocks of obsidian with it, which would be about half the life of a normal diamond piackaxe (full life is 1,541 blocks). My slide bar underneath my enchanted one, however, has barely moved away from the right edge. It has much much more than half its life left.
Please could you clarify for me, are you saying Unbreaking III gave 3.5 times the standard life, or 3.5 times more than a standard life?
The wiki seems to suggest it should be four times standard life.
If its not much more than II, then I might be more inclined to accept an Unbreaking II Enchantment when offered.
Thanks
The exact results with the stone pickaxes were: Regular = 132 blocks, Unbreaking I = 268 blocks, Unbreaking II = 406 blocks, Unbreaking III = 472 blocks. Iron pickaxe were: Regular = 251 blocks, Unbreaking I = 525, Unbreaking II = 755... and unfortunately I forgot to save the spreadsheet after counting the blocks up with the iron Unbreaking III pickaxe and I can't remember the exact count. As I recall, though, the ratio wasn't much different than the stone pickaxe. With the stone pickaxe, the math I used was 472/132 = 3.576 times the original life of the pickaxe. I did the test mining blocks with my cobblestone generator, which uses pistons, so there was no risk of any losses in lava, etc. I also started each time with an empty inventory so that I could count the blocks accurately when the pickaxe broke. All the pickaxes were brand new when I started the test.
ETA (sorry, got called away). I do believe there is a bit of a randomness to the amount Unbreaking gives, so to be really valid, the tests should be repeated several more times... but I'm probably not going to bother with it myself. I think whether or not the Unbreaking III is worth the extra XP over Unbreaking II is a personal call. I'm finding XP fairly easy to accumulate, even in Peaceful mode, because of all the passive animals that spawn in an Xbox world. So, spending the max XP for a random enchantment and then just going about to collect more XP to try again is not a big issue for me. I suppose I would think twice about accepting the dud enchantments if I were doing a lot of diamond tools and was shy on diamonds. Mostly, however, I've been enchanting iron tools and armor and just keeping the duds in a chest for later use; and even so, I still have a chestful of iron ingots I could use since I'm not really planning to build a railroad in this particular world... still waiting for jungles to come out before I commit to building up a world completely.
I have no problem with the not saving to get a better enchantment, in fact today, I did the same thing, end up with with an efficiency III, unbreaking IV, fortune III on my diamond pick axe, my first time around, only got efficiency IV yeah, I'd rather re-start a few times for what I got.

Unbreaking gives a random chance that when you use the pick the durability won't go down. That chance increases with each level of Unbreaking. I don't know the statistics right off hand but it shouldn't be that hard to find if you want to see it for yourself.

Diamond pickaxes only go up to efficiency IV. Only gold can get efficiency V right now. Maybe in the future we can get efficiency V on diamond. And unbreaking only goes to III, not IV. I'm assuming you got unbreaking and efficiency switched?

Probably, one of them is III, the other is IV, either way, it's about the best pick axe you can get(unless your into silk touch, but eh whatever), so I don't care if I had to save before I enchanted to get it, my map seems to lack diamonds for some reason, having a real hard time finding them for some reason, so I'm not gonna let a good pick axe go to waste.

Uh yeah... that's what my experiment was all about.

It's not an exact number. Every tool with unbreaking will most likely never have the same durability. I just find that your misleading with giving exact numbers, IMO.

Uh yeah... that's why I took a ratio and then generalized.. saying Unbreaking I doubles and Unbreaking II, triples and Unbreaking III seems to multiplying by 3.5 times and why I suggested that to be valid the experiment should actually be done several more times. Right now, with this limited data, It's looking like Unbreaking III is not giving even near quadruple the life of the axe (which the formula provided in the Wiki seems to suggest it should). On even an iron pickaxe, the difference in the number of blocks between 3.5 times and 4 times is significant. MCAddict asked for a clarification, that's why I provided what raw data I had. You're welcome to repeat the experiments and find out for yourself. I doubt I'll be doing them over again and again - no time for that and I'd rather be playing the game.
