Yo, Its Kazuki
I wanna say maybe 85% people probably already know this but when I found it out I was shcoked so i wanna share it.
No Flame wars or any of that trash...
Anyways I find it a pain to get silk touch on my picks...Alot...
So when I hit 30 EXP i head over to the enchanting table, Save my game before I enchant.
Enchant my pick and if its not silk touch re-load and you'll get a diffnt Enchant.
Alot of people probably already know this but its helpful when you need something that you can't get.
Although, I prefer not to have silk touch. My pick has efficiency 3, Fortune 2 and unbreaking 3 . . .can't ask for much better really.
I alternate on my picks.
I use Silk to add to my Stone Brick platform and Fortune to get extra materials while mining.
Adding to the re-load idea above, the same can be done with Diamond Ore until each one yields 4 Diamonds each (assuming Fortune III).
Anyways I find it a pain to get silk touch on my picks...Alot...
Silk touch is useful IF you're planning to build something that requires regular stone. It saves having to smelt it from cobblestone. It's also useful if you're wanting to get a bunch of grass underground in a hurry. You can just collect the grass blocks.
The only time I would even consider this is if I enchant a diamond tool, as that would be the only thing I would even want silk touch on. I don't use diamond tools regularly... Iron and stone.
But it is a decent idea, and yeah I knew about it. That happens to be with a lot of games...>< lol
EDIT: Since I did a test run on diamond picks filling a double chest full of them in creative.
5 out of all that had silk touch with level 30 use. most had more than just silk touch on it though, like unbreaking and efficiency.
Of course those last 2 are the most common ones. followed by I think fortune. Silk touch being the last and most rare.
I got twice the amount, if not more of fortune than I did silk touch. The rest had the 2 common ones... All had III or IV level of enchantment. Fortune tossed between II and III.
This was just a double chest test. took me about 12 before I saw my first silk touch, then another 8, and after that it was coming to greet me ....><

Neat experiment. So far, I seem to be about 50/50 silk touch vs. fortune. Since Minecraft is a game to me, rejecting enchantments by exiting and trying again feels like picking up the dice and re-rolling in a board game; but unless you're playing with others, it is really a personal call. I could see even in some games playing with others where the practice could be agreed upon to be allowed. In this game, the rules are whatever you and the group you're playing with make them.
I think I only 're-roll' because it's diamonds. Experience is easy to come by, especially with the skeleton spawner I have 'converted'. If I were using Iron tools for enchanting, I'd probably just 'lava bin' them if I wasn't happy.

I should lava bin a bunch of mine, but I just can't bring myself to do it. So far, they're all just gathering dust in a chest... someday, I might need them. If I stick with this world when the End comes out (and I probably won't), I might be tempted to do some re-rolls on armor and a diamond sword just to get through confronting the End Dragon. I got lucky with my bow - got Infinity I, Flame I, Punch II, AND Power IV first try. Problem is, I'm saving that one now for the End Dragon... and I may never even use it (lol).
I've been starting a new world with every update tbh. I'm looking forward till all the terrain gen updates have been done, so that I can finally start a world and stick with it. I've built almost every useful thing that I can think of so far . . . but on separate worlds.
Y'know, I have the exact same bow. It's really useful on creepers. I didn't get it on my first go though. My sword also has knockback/sharpness/looting/smite . . I think, can't remember tbh.
Tip that I have leanrt . . . don't save your weapons/useful items just in case you need them in the future. . . I've done that before and never used them. It's like buying a new car and not using it cause you might use some of the fuel in the tank which you may need for later. Live for the day. Enjoy the fruits of your labor. Plus, you can always make them again.
A another trick of getting the silk touch is clicking in the enchantment table 4 times with a pick axe
You sure about that? Like 100% sure? Any tricks like this for fortune . .. . or are you just guessing?
I know the one for looting. . . . holding a pick, jump 3 times. Spin clockwise one. Change to your sword, then press X, Triangle, R1, R1, L2, Circle, Square, then enter the enchantment table to get looting and God mode.. . .. Oh no, wait. . . maybe that's the cheat for doom 2 on the PS1.
if you feel like re-loading your world to get different enchants is a cheat , and you get a bad enchant on a spoon eg. diamond shovel lvl 30 enchant only got fortune II. Put your tool in a minecart chest and break it and the enchant will dissappear.
What I do is I fight blazes with a enchanted diamond sword then make whatever each time I get to level 30. My diamond sword usually lasts long enough for me to level up to 30 5 or 6 times then I just make another one.
Usually I get a pickaxe with Efficieny IV, Fortune III, and Unbreaking III. I wish we could get Unbreaking IV, but I heard we need anvils to do that which we dont have. I mined 5 diamond blocks once and got 17 diamonds out of it. I was thrilled.
I will say that I was happy to keep a silk touch pickaxe because I got a lot of redstone ore with it and natural stone. That is a huge time saver for me since I use natural stone a lot.
I must admit I've done the savescumming thing many times on my diamond pickaxes. For some reason, enchanting at max 99% of the time only yields an Efficiency IV.
Don't get me wrong, Efficiency IV is nothing to sneeze at, but I want multiple enchantments. My first enchanted pick was Efficiency and Fortune, and I must admit it spoiled me. Getting double payouts from diamonds and coal was awful nice.

Works with a bow and sword too to get flame sometimes infinity

you do realize the middle one that always gives you 30 isnt the best one to go for ?, your better trying for the bottom enchant, but its alot harder to get it to lvl 30
Actually, that I didn't know. So if the 30 isn't at the bottom, don't use it?
put your item in the enchantment table, hover over the item, then keep keep pressing the A button till you see a lvl 30 on the bottom enchant, can take some time, its generally the one i go for and on the wiki it does say the bottom enchant is said to be the best
I learn something new everytime i get on these forums...
Anyways the wiki?
I mean its not 100% right. I don't know if the whole enchant chart is 100% either.
However, at least in my experience, it seems that exiting without saving doesn't change the enchant, I got Projectile Protection IV five times in a row with a level thirty, after resetting the enchants to a different set, I got the same enchant three times in a row, Protection III.

That would be for the PC, the middle is best for the Xbox, that shows the max level possible. There is no way to get the "best enchant." That is because of personal preference, maybe one person needs a Fortune pick while I have 10 of those. If I get Fortune is that really the "best enchant" for me? Probably not.
This is the same as just going into creative to enchant. Takes the challenge out of enchanting. Part of the fun is the randomness factor. I duplicated on my first ever world and after that it was no longer fun. It just seems silly to use this.

Never thought about doing it with the ores. Cheers bud.
As for my pick, it was fortune 3, not 2.
