it may be cheaper (and easier) to buy a newer motherboard available for your case style that would support the cpu you'd need, and depending on where you get the comp parts, they can be between $75-$120 (motherboard & cpu combined). easier than buying a new PC (unless you are using a laptop, then you're SOL)
Trust me, this thing isn't worth the upgrade. If my aim does become a better PC, I'm going to build a decent rig from scratch. As far as recording goes, I'm leaning toward a new HDTV and getting the Hauppage Gaming Edition HD-PVR, I've been needing an excuse to get a new TV anyway. If it's for the channel, I can convince myself that it's not just another luxury I'm wasting money on.
Haha, funny stuff there man. Anyway, the audio is 100% better, no problems hearing you this time. I still think you should let me host you in the R.A.P.E. U pyramid. (Its the Redstone And Piston Engineering University dirtbags ) Either way, awesome stuff now buddy.
That would be great! I love the R.A.P.E. U campus, especially those dark pathways by the garden...
But yeah, I still plan on doing that. Much more exciting than my 184 acre lawn (Yes, I did the math, this number is accurate, rounded to the nearest whole integer.) that I recorded the first video on.
my HDPVR uses component, still does 1080i, not that i ever record that high, 720 is more than sufficient plus quicker to upload than 1080, so dont dismiss component
That's the plan. It's my main choice, as I was wanting a new TV anyway. Still may be a little while from now, life and its stupid priorities need taken care of first.
well i just got schooled! maybe you should do a second series on youtube discussing the differences between genres of metal! hahahaha
Nahhh, that Infidel guy from Amsterdam claims the spot as YouTube's metal expert. I have thought about getting some sort of camera and a mic, do some vocal covers. Mostly for fun, and hopefully to get some professional feedback.
go for it mate, who knows, you could be the next big thing! start your own metal band, maybe call it Blood Red Stone (get it? cos of the redstone.....aaah forget it)
Fun fact: There is a band called Red Stone Theory.
But no, the bands I like don't tend to make it very far, unless they sell out and become a duplicate of Asking Alexandria. My favorite bands just get no love at all, a catchy tune is valued more than a well thought out and beautifully complex song structure. Ever notice how many people say the only kind of music they can't stand is classical? Their minds are too simple to understand a rhythm that doesn't follow the same metronome throughout the song. In my opinion, most mainstream music isn't catchy, it's just plain boring.
The other day, I was giving my friend a ride home, while listening to the album "Odd Senses" by PsyOpus. He made the remark that it was just noise, random notes, and screaming... To top it all off, this was after he had YouTubed a bunch of rap songs at my house, completely destroying my recommendations. (It will take years to make YouTube stop suggesting me Lil' Wayne or some other generic talentless garbage.) I honestly considered letting him walk the last 15-20 miles. If your favorite genre is hip hop, and you interpret sweep arpeggios as "random noise", don't imply you know a damn thing about music. Lyrically, maybe (big deal) but instrumentally... no.

my buddy actually has been in a few small scale (aka local only) bands, but he's really friggen talented (thus far he's mathered the guitar, on his way to mastering the citar, and is fairly good at the bass (guitar, not stand up). he's got his own youtube channel, it's mostly cam footage of some of the shows he's done (with a few random vids, including one from when he got hacked) and 14 songs from a solo album he did before he took his trip to india earlier this year. if you want, i can send ya a link to his channel. his style is a mix, mostly a cross between british invasion / modern punk, but as a generalization, it could be called "alternative rock", but more the mid 70's-mid 80's style, not the 90's+ kind (though a few are).
Not to interrupt the music disussion... But really great video, I was mainly watching it with my daughter so she could learn more but I ended up understanding a few things better myself.
I just saw for the first time the content of the upcoming update for pc 1.5 are we getting this cause if so won't it affect your videos
Not really, the only things the upcoming updates will make completely obsolete is a couple piston quirks. I doubt we will make it to MCPC's upcoming update, but I really hope so. Any changes to existing redstone will be discussed and linked to in the description of the original video. All new redstone additions will be covered as well, as the updates come along.

That's great! Exactly what I like to hear. Keep an eye out, I'll probably update this thread with any new videos. The next part of this series we will actually start talking about Redstone Theory, this was just an introduction. We're about to get into the really interesting part, the true mechanics of redstone tiles and the essence of redstone itself.
Great video, also about not learning anything from redstone whatever tutorials, I do learn from them, because u can take a part from few things and combine that into one to create something u haven't seen before.
I wish this sort of thing was out when I first started learning redstone. I struggled with the PC versions, and learned a ton through trial and error. I was always frustrated that no tutorials explained why they worked, and I doubt the author really knew. Just repeating information they got somewhere else.
Some feedback:
Write up a "lesson plan", for yourself so you have an idea where you are going, and don't get sidetracked mid-tutorial.
Also, put a list of the tutorials you have planned in the comments so you can have an easy links to them once you have them available.
Try to keep them under 10 mins, 15 at the most. Many people aren't willing to sit through anything much longer.
Some tutorials I'd like to see you do:
Falling Edge vs Rising Edge
Deconstruction of Hidden Doors (or other popular tutorials) showing WHY they work
Timing Only (a video showing best ways to get a signal of 1 tick, 2 tick, 30 sec, 5 mins, etc)
Redstone vs Liquid (using redstone to change the flow of water & lava)
BUD switches
And on the topic of METAL!!! I book a ton of shows in Seattle, metal and otherwise. I can be reached via PM or XBL, if someone needs venue.

My opinion on block by block tutorials and the things I say about them may be a bit harsh, but I'm biased. The point is that most of them don't teach you anything other than how to create a specific circuit. Anything you learn about redstone by following them tends to be your own discovery, self-education. This is all fine and dandy, but it's just not the best way, if it was there would be no such thing as school, children would be thrown out on the streets and told to start learning.

I consider building examples beforehand to be my lesson plan. You should have seen the first video, when I started right off with a new world. I considered making something like a bullet list to keep on the side, but examples keep me on-topic most of the time. I tend to segue into completely different discussions naturally.
As for the list, it will be the series itself, as I'll eventually amass quite a good handful of tutorial videos. I'll link to the next video of a series in all of the videos though, just in case someone is viewing from a really cheap mobile device or something. That 10 - 15 min. duration was my original goal, but it simply won't be possible for several topics. I really don't want to leave anything out or split a specific tutorial into two parts.
Timing Only (a video showing best ways to get a signal of 1 tick, 2 tick, 30 sec, 5 mins, etc)
I think of something completely different when I hear timing, but this is also a good idea. I already planned a video showing how to easily find the speed of your circuit. Also how to make a system that is fast and efficient, explaining the difference between serial and parallel logic. There are some cases, such as pipelined CPUs, where serial logic can be efficient in complex operations, though not so much in basic functions as the data still has to travel through irrelevant hardware.
Redstone vs Liquid (using redstone to change the flow of water & lava)
BUD switches
These both will come with the video on piston logic. Unless you are talking about using block updates to change the direction of a liquid, though I thought they removed that in an update. :S
EDIT: I didn't forget about the message, just haven't gotten around to replying. I'll have tomorrow and the next day off, so I'll reply some time over the weekend.
Looking forward to the rest of your videos. Following block by block guides for stuff is frustrating and boring, it's much more enjoyable to figure it out for myself. This is pretty much exactly what I need to get motivated to start tinkering.
You are the exact kind of person I'm trying to target with this series. It will be a long time from now, but hopefully these videos can lead a complete n00b up to the point of building a functional redstone CPU. If you're not interested in computer science, you will still learn about mechanisms that can be practical elsewhere.
Also, I have a question. I'm thinking about starting a series reviewing games from the XNA marketplace, since a good indie game is so hard to find. I have a good few indie games that none of my friends have heard of, so most people probably don't know about them either. I just thought it might be kind of neat to bring them out of obscurity and let them rise above the Minecraft clones and avatar games. So the question is, does this sound like a good idea? I really want to start an extra series that doesn't require a lot of planning, that way I can record some videos on weekdays.
If you're looking for a capture upgrade, I suggest the Elgato game capture. Check it out on Amazon. It has great reviews. It's on sale ($20 off) so it's 160 right now. That is pretty steep for starting a channel, but if you plan on expanding your channel, this is a great place to start.

BTW if this is breaking any rules, I can remove it easily.
Here's the problem, a capture card isn't necessarily the issue, it's my PC. Even my cheap SD card could record in much higher quality, but the capture software drops a huge amount of frames, I'm talking 5+ every second. And $160 is pretty cheap for HD recording, I was prepared to pay $200+ for a nice HD-PVR. I will upgrade eventually, my funds are just a bit tied up right now.
Last video wasn't bad i actually learned something didn't know dispensers could power other dispensers thought they were like pistons
Well for the most part, they are the same, their reactions to the environment (in terms of redstone) are identical. The only difference is that they're opaque and pistons are transparent. The other dispensers surrounding the initial dispenser are actually not being powered at all. They are only being activated because they detect that an adjacent block has became a receiver. A piston is transparent, just like glass, and therefore it is impossible for it to become a receiver.
