These are some techniques i have used solo to survive my first night on hard survival.
1- put my map on the hot bar and look around. I need wood and stone for torches and weapons so that's the first priority. chop enough wood to make a craft table then make an axe and pickaxe. u need about 15 or so blocks of wood 20 is better. the extra wood is for a bed and torches. then get enough cobblestone to make a forge two stone swords and stone tools.
2- watch your time and scout the area. if you can find a village head for the tower top or the largest house. set up your forge first to start making charcoal then take some doors from other buildings to ad extra exits to your house. if you have time hunt sheep for wool to make a bed but make sure you get some torches out before dark. if u can't find wool then spend your night mining under the house.
3- u can gather enough dirt to make a noob tower about 20 blocks high put a platform up there and start making torches.
4- u can hold up in a cave but be careful of only having one exit
5- make a boat and spend your night exploring waterways away from hostile mobs
6- get in an open area on a hill like a desert. place several groups of cactus (5 or 6) as a wall. u can draw mobs towards u and duck on the other side of the wall. they will kill themselves trying to get u
7- run
1) Run towards a village.
2) Kill sheep and chop down a tree along the way
3) Craft a crafting table and bed
4) Place bed in a villagers house and sleep at dusk.
5) ???
6) Profit.
1. Get 4 wood to make crafting table, wooden axe, and wooden sword (optional)
2. Use axe to get more wood (I like to get about 15 blocks). Keep alert for sheep and meat. Use axe to kill if you did not make a sword yet.
3. Make wooden pickaxe & dig down to collect cobblestone (this is also the start of your first shelter)
4. Make stone pickaxe, stone sword and a furnace
5. Cook some wood into charcoal and make torches
6. Surface and hunt for sheep and meat.
7a. If sheep found - make bed, sleep in well-lit underground shelter made as you collected cobblestone.
7b. If no sheep found - close up opening to outside, make more torches if you have the wood, start mining a stairway underground & hope to hit coal & iron before hitting a cave. If you do hit a cave, block it up and redirect your stairway to avoid encountering too many mobs that first night. After encountering iron, go back up, smelt it and make iron tools.
Well. Scrap getting wood for tools, just activate the bonus chest and you're way ahead. You also get 2-4 torches with it, usually.
My issue isn't surviving the first night, it's exploring the cave systems (The mobs, not the exploring part). On hard it can be a pain, and seems like ages before getting any diamonds.

Good thought on the bonus chest. I never think to activate it. Yeah, I've found the shear number of caves and their size to be a bigger issue now... and lava. EVERY cave I enter that goes to any decent diamond-finding depth seems to bottom out in a huge lava lake... and I'm just not spotting diamonds visible in the walls as frequently as I used to. If I try branch mining below level 12 or 13, I seem to hit lava a few blocks in every direction I try. PITA.
Yeah, I used to love 'worstseedever' . . . 40+ diamonds in plain view.
Lava is an issue, a big issue. Especially as you said, when mining. For me though, it's more the mobs, and the amount of them, that I'd have to fight without any decent weapons.
