The empty space is for water if I'm caving and sometimes I swap the axe out as well but most of the time that's what my hotbar looks like. I'm too anal to not keep my inventory and storage neat. And I always have water, arrows, map and a stack of logs in my inventory proper at all times. It's good to be prepared.
Dirt and cobblestone are subject to change. But my thinking is that going into a dark cave, I'll carry torches and if there's a mob there I can quickly get to my sword and take it out, or if I need to get rid of some stone I can go right to the pickaxe. Dirt and cobblestone are for making staircases or blocking stuff off, and the shovel is obviously for dirt. Map for seeing what y-coordinate I'm on, and food to eat.
Fire Res. Potion (6 min) - Potion of Swiftness (3 min) - Bread (or Beef) - Map - Sword - Water - Pickaxe - Torches - Cobblestone.
My usual set up as I tend to do a lot of branch mining so the potions come in really handy for blocking deep lava pits and getting back to base quickly
hmm..... If u fall in lava the drink the fire res potion does it stop u from dieing ?Edit the the I ment then
I keep my best pickaxe in the first slot, a water bucket in the second slot, my best sword in the far last slot, and food in the second last slot. The other slots all vary quite a bit depending on where I'm going and what it is that I'm planning to do.
