A long time ago I learned from this forum how to make a Lava Blade Grinder.
A big dark room for spawning, with a 4x4 river current that drags the baddies to a level of lava at face level (using ladders to suspend the lava).
It always worked really well, but needed me to be present to lure the monsters towards the trap.
I'm thinking of a new tweak. Do you think this will work?
I'm gonna set up a lava grinder on the entire third floor of my castle. Above the lava tongue I'm gonna set up a fortified catwalk and put a few Snow Golems up there to lure the baddies.
Under the lava blade, I'm gonna set up a network of water that leads it to a drain, which will empty out into a well in my workshop.
In theory, I should get a never-ending stream of goodies, right?
Yeah all about fall damage here.. i have a pit they fall on where one hit kills them.. kill em all thru some alternating glassblocks.. open up the water gate and all the goodies come my way... plus XP since lava isn't doing the killing for me.

you still need to be within 128 blocks of the spawning pad for mobs to appear. That said, my last lava blade grinder did not need me standing in position for the water to drag mobs to the blade so I am not sure why yours does. Now if I have aggro on a mob in the grinder and stand on the wrong side then yes it would attempt to swim against the current, but if you aren't close enough to aggro the mob in the wrong direction the water should push them just fine.
Yes, fall damage grinders are easier to build but leave too many spiders alive (in my experience). with the lava blade I could leave myself in front of the grinder for long periods of time without worry and still collect plenty of string to boot. On the previous map where I had a fall damage grinder I would wake up every morning to a roof full of spiders and very little string, sometimes even dead. With the lava blade nothing gets through.
I Don't know what it is about my set up, But spiders die every time on impact. I believe that they are attempting to climb up onto the water pushing them downwards and then fall again, so that 1extra block height is enough to kill them.. only a handful of times out of the hundreds of mobs that fell victim to gravity has a spider hit the ground and lived..

I'm putting the final touches on my map which has a totally automated mob drops, including slimes, melons, eggs, pumpkins, sugar cane, cactus, and more. Most things auto harvest and are streamed to a central location within my house near my storage area. I have a MASSIVE storage system which consist of no more then around 180 double chests of every item. (no its not even near full). With a flick of a switch from within the collection area i can start generating sand and gravel, ect.
Recently we begin experimenting by separating creepers and using these to 'blow' up and stream away generated cobblestone and wood which we also can easily use generators and push into an obsidian room where the creeper is placed. Meaning free cobblestone/smooth stone and wood without the need to mine it. The only downside so far is that some of the resources are lost when the creeper blows up.
99% was done in survival mode, though a lot of testing was done in creative test worlds first. We did have to break into creative mode to get ice as sadly our silk touch still doesn't work on ice.

I agree. My buddy and I just finished a zombie pigmen farm utilizing fall damage. Unlimited gold nuggets! haha.
