what i know: u make snow golems by placing two snow blocks one on the other and a pumkin on top jackolanterns work also but make no difference in the final golem. they can wander into desert and not melt (maybe that's only at night) they wander randomly and fall in holes easily. if you want them to stay in place they must be walled in. you can leave a "firing" hole for them to shoot snowballs through. they are easy to kill. when they die they drop a small pile of snowballs. supposedly they fire snowballs at hostile mobs which are not lethal but push the hostile a little but...
i created 10 and waited for mobs using myself as bait i brought over creepers, zombies, spiders and skeletons. only two of them fired at the skeletons and that was two seperate incidents. even when hostile mobs passed just a feww blocks from them. I let a zombie and skeleton hit me and still no reaction. what am i missing? do they have to be facing hostile mobs directly to notice them and fire? I was going to use them at entrances to help clear a path from creepers and such when exiting my base. do they despawn?
just like any other mob, yes, they have to notice a target. However, they have excellent xray vision and may actually lock on to a target that you can't see and ignore the one that is chasing you.
they where only added in the last update so expect a few bugs,
i have mine strewn all over my map encased in pill boxs, there more of a deterant, they stop mobs from entering my city whilst leaving my entrance open, would be too easy if they killed all mobs they encountered, plus the game would constantly be spawning mobs
thank you for the correction you are right. i went back and redid my previous test. I had 8 pumpkins and two jackolanterns. there were hostile mobs around and it seems that at least to died soon after i made them so i thought i had 10 wondering around because i started with enough material for ten but didn't notice two dieng quickly. i have also found out they can swim they seem to move faster on ice and on grass they leave a snow trail on sand they do not (at least sand in desert). The snow trail ensures plenty of snowballs for fighting blazes.
so with your pill boxes do they have a one or two block "firing port" and do they always face that way.
The can be used as a infinite snow block generator as well, though you'll eat through shovels like there is no tomorrow. I use snow as a ceiling color in my houses, has a nice look to it and these snow golems made it a lot easier as i didn't have to travel to a snow area to gather snow wait for it to snow and repeat.
They can kill blazes too. I find it funny to watch a group of snowmen kill a few blazes.
i didn't think they would survive the nether but i just tried it. awesome. there were maybe half a dozen blazes and my snowmen dropped pretty quick but if i encase the blaze spawn in cobblestone to keep them from flying and force them through a bottle neck I can see this being very practical. a few pill boxes for the snow golems and im golden. blaze rods can be used for furnace fuel also so that's a double bonus and snow golems use renewable resources so they are unlimited. plus i don't need them to kill all the blazes but wounding them when there are several attackers is great.
edit: snow golems also shoot at a zombie pigman so watch out for turning pigmen hostile.

I believe in an update or so it will be changed so that snow golems will melt in the nether, so use it while it lasts!

This design can be improved if a lava moat is put around it, of course you should keep flammable blocks away from it.
8 is the max. when i tried to make a ninth the pumpkin head popped off and the snow blocks went bye bye.
