i was playing around and stumbled across this. if u take the raw materials into the nether and a craft table u can map a nether map. am i the only one here that didn't know that? makes me wonder what else im missing.
Yes, you can. I don't think it's a particularly informative map to just look at because the nether doesn't really have a "surface" layer. The map does help for finding X,Y & Z coordinates in the nether for setting up linked portals though.
Also your little arrow thingy on the map spins around chaotically in random directions... So like the person said above me, really the only use for having a map at all in the nether is to link portals, or just using the coordinates period...:D

I was wondering how that worked. I played around with my current seed in creative mode in a new save file, and hadn't looked at my default map. I entered the nether, then looked at my map for the first time and I had the nether version. I tried to replicate this in my regular survival save but the second map I created was just a duplicate of my existing overworld map. I'm guessing the thing I was missing was that the map needs to be created while in the nether?
Even though your arrow just spins in on the map in the nether (same thing as the compass) you can still determine the cardinal directions by moving around a bit and watching the co-ordinates, and your actual movement on the map.

yeah in survival you must actually make the map in the place you intend to capture on it.:D

It would shure help me! I can't tell which derection I'm facing on the regular map half the time bad eyesight. But does it map out Nether Fortresses on the map too. That would be a landmark since there so big in my Nethers.

unless people care an awful lot things will not cange they just will not
Both of these maps are visually useless, but the X/Y/Z coordinates can be slightly useful....
Stay fluffy~
