OK I'm about to give up on redstone. For the life of me, I can't get this whole inverter thing to work like I expect it to.
As an idea -- would anyone be interested in hosting a Redstone Workshop one of these days?
This is what I'm thinking....
1.) Find the resident Redstone expert 'round these parts (certainly not me)
2.) Have him create a world just for this purpose.
3.) A band of volunteers (starting with me) will log on a few days prior and help him mine up some supplies.
4.) Give him a few days to build a few tutorial devices.
5.) Set a date and post it on the forums.
6.) A bunch of us log on (peaceful mode, no build privs) to hear him talk about the devices, and we can examine his set-pieces (bridge, doors, complex circuits)
Of course the easier way is just to do the Youtube tutorials, but this would give more of a one-on-one feel.
It's infuriating to me because so many times I wanna yell at the screen, "WHY ISNT THIS WORKING!?!"
This is where I think a tutor would be awesome. I could tell him what I'm setting up, he can watch me build it, and probably tell me in a few seconds what the problem is.
Hey, Guys I think I can help you with your redstone problem me and my friends are quote "redstone magic"
Don't really know what that is suppose to mean but I'm Great with redstone and I would be willing to help
I be on today about 4:00 EST and my GT is Ronrulz add me and I will help you out.
/\ /\ what he's been saying.. Play with it.. soon you'll have a "Oh Snap!" moment and kinda get one thing that then leads you to know others... I feel semi comfortable with redstone, and there is still plenty of times where I just wire something slightly wrong and it all doesn't work. Play with it is all I can say..... Don't give up!

Yeah we have passed this idea around some. I did in fact start building a redstone tutorial building in one of my worlds. I haven't worked on it in a bit, but I did finish the first lesson, which just explains the basic properties of redstone. Lesson two will be about logic gates, and lesson three will be about putting it all together to make simple and complex devices. Hopefully I'll get around to those soon. My idea was to make it available as a downloadable map once we get that feature in the game. Its just easier to learn "in person" as opposed to a tutorial video IMO.
I would be happy to give you a tour of it Evil, if only to stop you from giving up on the blessing that is redstone. Hit me up with a message on live if your interested.
One of the big problems I have with redstone is building a vertical circuit.
I can build a drawbridge with redstone scattered and visible everywhere, but it looks like crap. I know for a fact that you can design a redstone circuit all underground (with inverters) so that no redstone is showing.
Alas I'm too dumb to actually DO it. But I've seen other more clever players do it.

Had a problem with that as well for some time.. but I eventually got it down. The problems with wiring the Top Most block, as opposed to all blocks vertically at the same time. There's always a way.

If you YouTube "redstone academy" and start from the beginning it should help. I used the tutorials and GenerikB if very helpful and thorough. He makes it easy to understand and gives you tons of examples.
Funny thing, I was actually thinking about starting an MCXBLA server dedicated to redstone, somewhat like the RDF. Even thought about talking to Jessassin and the rest of the crew about making it an official branch. Then I decided it would be best to wait and see if we get rent-a-servers.
Until we get a legitimate world sharing feature, a tutorial world is somewhat inefficient. If you need specific help, feel free to add me and I'll see what I can do. By the way, there is no such thing as a redstone master. Conquering redstone is a life long quest that is never finished.

Well you seem to get pretty damn close to being a master in my mind.

I see you haven't met disco_, RevolutionalRedstone, bennyscube, salajapaju, or Properinglish,. The things these people build make my projects look like a toddler's plaything.

I know the feeling dude, I tried making a vending machine that runs on coins and the buttons kept working even though no coin was inserted I tried everything; in the end I blew it to smithereens.

I could set this up, but only if there were some other redstoners willing to help me out.
Yeah, I did. You're right, Creative would be MUCH easier.
