If you don't have hunger or XP and you can feed animals, it means you need to download the latest Xbox update from Xbox Live. Hoppers, however, are not in the Xbox edition of the game yet. Fence gates are a crafted item.

Map coordinates were added also in a later version, so it's possible this is a feature you don't have with your version either (although I believe it is something that is in the disc version if that is what you're using). All you should have to do is open your map to see your current coordinates.
I do suggest you enable a Live profile with at least a Silver (free) level. You won't be able to play online, but I believe the game will at least still update.
Here is a link to the Xbox/Console Version History page to determine what features you have and don't have available at whatever version you're using.

Using the left stick, push it all the way forward once, release, and then push it all the way forward a second time (aka double tap forward). The Wiki would probably be very helpful at answering a lot of the other basic questions you might have.
Also, most of the directions regarding the PC Edition also apply to the console editions (as long as you take into consideration the version differences between the two). The PC Edition Wiki has very detailed pages on blocks and game mechanics like redstone, enchanting, etc.
I had some endermen in minecarts, flew high, and the endermen we're gone! I think mobs who are still will despawn. But there we're active slimes, until, I fell into the void and flew back up. The slimes also dissapeared! You probably need to be close to those animals.

Hostile mobs (like endermen and slimes) will despawn regardless; animals (sheep, cows, pigs) should not despawn if they cannot move more than 20 blocks in any direction.
I had a tank with fish and they were able to move more than 20 blocks. After me and some friends came back from destroying a village not too far they were suddenly gone.
If an animal can't move more than 20 blocks in any direction, it shouldn't despawn.
some may not be aware of the movement criteria, similar to that of light levels movement of 20 blocks from corner to corner would be 9x9 surrounded by fencing since “movement” in a diagonal direction means two movements, think of the knight on a chessboard

You can also use a nametags on them too. Named animals wont despawn

Affordable Minecraft Server Hosting
On our local multi-player with me my cousin and his girlfriend so not an official server host must be on.
She has a 19 by 19 room underground with fence and fence gate at intrance but her peaceful animals keep despawning.
Do they need sunlight to stay alive or something?
Or do the walls of the pin need to be player placed blocks?
